Where do the military salutes originate ? Anyone got any ideas ?

The one that Bush is doing on that picture originated with the knights in armor. When a knight lifted his visor and held it up his hand would go like that.

Yes I think I heard that before when I was a schoolkid maybe. It sounds very plausible, the knight would have to identify himself by showing his face otherwise the king (or whoever) would not know FOR SURE who they were talking to.
Here is information that I found on Wiki mentioning the origins of the Nazi Salute :-
The Hitler salute or in English as the Nazi salute, is a variant of the Roman salute, adopted by the Nazi Party as a sign of loyalty to its leader Adolf Hitler.
