With regards to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKQBLTpnZec:

I spoke to a colleague of mine about this and (although I personally feel this sort of technology is clearly available) he doesn't think that the FBI is capable of tracking a persons conversation via their mobile phone while its off (or at least not being able to do it very easily).

His thinking behind it is as follows:

If this is possible, hackers around the globe would have already have done this by now.
Why would the FBI let people know they could do this?
Maybe it's because they HAVE trouble doing this and want to push people away from mobile phones?

What do other people think of this?

I don't think they want to push people away from mobile phones, as indicated by the dearth of payphones (at least where I live, US). They've been ripping them out left and right for years, now.

Most new cell phones have a form of GPS built into them so that they can be accurately tracked (many people just buy these GPS devices...!!), but it is true that they could get a general location of a regular cell phone by judging the distance from microwave towers. Services are sold to snooping parents that give tracking data of their cell phone-toting teenagers, whether it's on or off. Look at this insidious site:
guardianangeltech.com/ (http://www.guardianangeltech.com/)
This one requires you buy their cell phone, though.

The elite have no trouble telling us what they're doing to us. It's a big joke to them. They think (realize) that most people are just too stupid/spiritually powerless to do anything about it. They laugh in our faces.

I theorized this one today. It really got me thinking. The way I see it, there's always power being drained by the phone so long as the battery is in; that's why you always have date and time when you turn it on (don't believe me take out the battery and then put it back in and turn it on- you lose the date and time until there's an official re-connect with the network). So it stands to reason they can ping the chip and activate the mic.
I have called people in the past and heard their radio playing before they answered!!!

For several years I have thought they might be able to do this. Also perhaps track via our digital cameras. When I have to go missing these are things I would leave behind.

I dont have a cell phone AND DONT WANT ONE!! (I think they are crap.. DROP CALLS ALL THE TIME,etc)

Just a way of keeping track of everyone!

Can intercept calls now for around £955: http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2010/07/intercepting-cell-phone-calls/

Very simple stuff... just depends if they can be bothered to trace YOU -

Thought I'd add my 2p worth here as someone who use to repair and re-program cellular phones for a living. My experience is in the UK with GSM phones.

[Geo-location]
Unless you have build in GPS on your phone there are two methods of locating a handset.

1. If you have WiFi enabled phone and are running a *spy* application that will locate you given the strength of the signals from WiFi networks mapped by Google and Skyhook. Typically this would be any Android App or anything by Google. Can be accurate up to 10m in a city, useless out in the sticks!

2. The signal strength between your handset and three or more cellphone towers is calculated to triangulate your position. Not very accurate, at best 200-300 yards.

[Your cellphone can be a glorified 'bug' even when turned off with the battery in]

Ok. A phone would have to have specific firmware routines to do this and believe me, if it was in any commercially available phone, hackers would have found it by now and used it themselves!!! There is firmware available for the Nokia 33X0 series old cellphone to turn it into a bug, but one of these would stand out like a sore thumb these days.

When you turn off your phone, all the battery is doing is powering volatile memory that holds stuff like your language setting, time, date, timezone etc, it's not powering up a mega-hidden firmware subroutine to bug you or contact the celltowers just so you can be tracked. Not convinced? then get a scanner and see for yourself.

This is how you can intercept calls. In the UK everyone from the secret service down to your local council just use the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act on the network provider who will give up your call in a second, that they now store for 2 years (i think).
