Going to watch it with me girly friend. Cosmic events like this send chills up me spine. Watch it too, and let's try to synch up on all continents throughout Earth...it's a shared experience. :)

Sweetness, I love meteor showers. An early birthday present from the cosmos for meeeeeee. Ok for you too.

BTW, a week ago I was out in my driveway at night having a smoke and I saw the most amazing meteorite of my entire life. I just happened to glance up at the perfect moment and there she was...this huge blue flash, tail and all, descending below the cloud cover. It was so bright it looked like the size of the moon and I'm pretty sure whatever was left of it hit the ground somewhere in southern Minnesota. I've never seen a blue one before...I mean this thing was true blue. Very cool looking!

At the risk of sounding like one of those conspiracy nutters, I wonder if meteor showers and the such are the cosmos' way of communicating with Earthlings? We may not be able to understand what "they" are saying, but nontheless...

It's definately a possibility...because there was another experience I had when I lived in Colorado. I was out on my deck at night talking to my bud about these odd red lights I had seen in the Cheyenne Mountain region...while I was pointing to the mountains where I had seen them I glanced up at the perfect moment again. Not only had I looked up at the right moment, but I looked directly at this thing. It was the brightest one I've ever seen. Bright white with a red outline, so bright it left an temporary imprint on my eyes. I actually felt the need to close them afterwards and could still see the outline. What are the odds we were talking about ufos at that exact moment and I saw that meteorite, perfectly centered where I was looking? Coincidence? Time will tell. I've seen a ton of shooting stars in my day but those two I will never forget :)

I'm glad you said so, because I've seen and experienced things I've been afraid to tell other people, for fear of being "a nutter".

Believe me, I understand what you're saying. That's the main reason this forum found me. You, my friend, are not crazy. You're aware ;)

...and that avatar is excellent lol

Cool stuff, thanks for the link carlg!!:D

I also knew this was coming up as it coincides with the UK meet up (woohoo!!), so I'm hoping the sky is clear so that we can all get a good view. Although we usually have thick cloud over here when such events are taking place, but keeping fingers crossed for a clear one!

Well, I couldn't see anything on Thursday night (too cloudy), but......

FRIDAY NIGHT WAS INCREDIBLE!!! I saw one other meteor shower in ~2001, little itty-bitty things that were still cool, but Friday night, the meteors were breathtaking! They weren't frequent, but when they did fly across the sky, it was incredible, like big orange-red fireballs.

There were some amazing fireballs over the Cotswolds on Friday night during the Geminid shower.

It was awesome :)

Be great to have a sticky in one of the sub-fora dedicated to events in the night sky.

GREAT GEMINIDS

The reports are in and the verdict is ... the Geminids were a blast after all. The shower peaked on Dec. 14th and 15th with as many as 140 meteors per hour. Many were fireballs. This Geminid near Warsaw, Poland, lit up the night like a full Moon:

"The meteoroid fragmented into 4 pieces and observers heard a sonic boom similar to distant thunder," says Jarosław Dygos of the Polish Fireball Network whose TV camera recorded the explosion. "Look at the halo around the fireball," he points out. That was caused by meteor-light passing through ice crystals in the clouds--"beautiful!"
