Offense or Defense?

If you are new to the game of chess you need to understand that a balance between attacking and defending needs to be achieved. Many inexperienced players are quick to go on the offensive and look for the quick crushing defeat of their opponent. While being able to pull this off is impressive and good for the ego, the likelihood of a quick offensive win against a more experienced opponent is unlikely and a bad decision.

The flaw with the all out offensive assault is that an experienced opponent will see the gaping holes in your own defense. Experienced players sit and wait for this type of inexperience to show itself. Think of chess as a war in which you must defend your capitol (your king) while at the same time taking your opponents capitol. An army that simply runs into battle with bravery and no defensive protection may appear as courageous, but they also often suffer a crushing defeat quickly.

A balanced approach is the best when playing chess. Depending on your playing style you will likely lean in one direction, either offensive or defensive. Try to focus on this balance and keep your king protected while slowly applying your offensive strategy. At times the best offensive strategy is to wait for your opponent to begin an offensive front and to find the flaws in their attack. Doing this gives you the wonderful advantage of finding their gaping holes in their defense, instead of them finding your gaping holes. Keep working on improving your defensive skills, as this will lead you to victory more often than an all out offensive assault. Allow your opponent to make the mistakes instead of you and you will find a great deal of success in your game.

Maybe the moderators should open a chess sub-forum.

Hopefully chess is one thing that doesn't have programming in it.

Offense or Defense?

To be a really good player you have to practice, practice and practice. Psychology plays a very important role in chess, playing to passively with the White pieces means you throw away the initiative of the first move. After getting plenty of games under the belt a player develops a very strong intuition regarding what is possible and what is not in any position.
Chess is more to do with Pattern Recognition than the ability to memorize long list of variations, although like I said before to play really well you need to be booked up i.e you need to know your opening theory otherwise you run the risk of being crushed in the opening before you get to the middlegame.

Avoid the crowd. Do your own thinking independently. Be the chess player, not the chess piece.

Cordial Felicitations Sunyatta60:

Thanks for the Link. Have had the pleasure playing against an 'A' Ranked Player. I won 1 Game out of a Hundred but learned much. He was Brutal with his Knights.

I agree asto the Pattern Recognition.

I agree also, the Skills I learned in the Game has been Beneficial in Life.

I have been playing Life Chess for over 40 years, I now approach my End-Game.

I am thinking 2008, learn the Oriental Game: GO

Napoleon rekns that chess is good for battle tactics. What's interesting is that chess doesn't have the usual numbers assosiated with esoterics, yet it originated from the aristocratic/upper class society, with kings, queens, bishops, nights, castles and, who are the pawns? Mere soldiers or us?

Yeah, those knights can be a pain in the arse, it's hard to see their moves comming.

Hi The link was taken from the OP in this thread a good link is this one:

http://www.chessbase.com/index.asp

All the up to date news that chess players want.

In chess we have a very good aphorism:

Never miss a check because it might well be Check Mate.

Knight Checks are more dangerous, because you have only two ways of dealing with them. Either you capture the Knight or you move your King.
If you can do neither then it is Check mate

Without sight of the board I play for you one of the most famous traps in the Caro Kann Opening:

1. e4 c6

2. Nf3 d5

3. Nc3 dxe4

4. Nxd4 Nbd7

5. Qe2 NgF6??

6. Nd6 1-0

This check mate is one of them most pleasing in chess it is called The Smothered Mate and is aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

Checkers is for Tramps.

Hi realwalk, I like to play chess here and there. This info is also usefull in fighting the New World Order with information. Cover your arse, expose the rats, cover your arse and expose the rats. Varying your methods as you go along so as to keep them on the run.

Good thread:)

Many things are compared with chess. Chess however, can't be compared with anything

Show me this game score...

Look at message 8.

"We are all capable of believing things which we know to be untrue, and then, when we are finally proved wrong, impudently twisting the facts so as to show that we were right. Intellectually, it is possible to carry
on this process for an indefinite time: the only check on it is that
sooner or later a false belief bumps up against solid reality, usually
on a battlefield."
