New Twist In 'Drowned' Canoeist Mystery
Updated:20:46, Monday December 03, 2007

The wife of a man who has come 'back from the dead' after vanishing in a canoeing mystery has moved to Panama in Central America where she has opened a bank account, Sky News has learnt.

John and Anne DarwinSky sources understand that some of the proceeds of the sale of her homes near Hartlepool have been placed in the account and her furniture sent there.

In 2002, the smashed red canoe of John Darwin was found washed up on a beach off Seaton Carew, leading rescue teams to conclude the chances of finding him alive were "practically nil".

He was declared legally dead in April 2003.

But Cleveland Police said the married father-of-two walked fit and well into a London police station at 5.30pm on Saturday.

Mr Darwin's father Ronald, 91, said he always knew his son was alive but might have been suffering from amnesia.

Mr Darwin said when his son was four or five he was knocked down by a car and suffered a head injury, which could have caused amnesia later in his life.

"Now he's got his memory back," Mr Darwin said.

Father Ronald Darwin"When I speak to him, I will ask him where he has been these last few years and I'll ask 'why didn't you make arrangements to see me before now? I'll tell him a lot more too, but I'm extremely happy now."

Cleveland police hope to speak to his son soon.

Det Chief Insp Paul Beddow said: "We are pleased Mr Darwin has been located and any interviews with him are a matter of procedure.

The Darwins' house in Seaton Carew"This has been a long-running inquiry by Cleveland Police and officers from the inquiry team hope to speak to Mr Darwin later today to establish his whereabouts during the last five-and-a-half years."

Mr Darwin has now been reunited with sons Mark and Anthony.

The 57-year-old went missing some time after 9am on Thursday, March 21, 2002, after he left his house to go canoeing in the sea off Seaton Carew.

Neighbour Alec DixonThe Evening Gazette in Middlesbrough reported on March 23: "A paddle was found at sea as rescue teams launched a massive search - but to date there have been no further signs of Mr Darwin or his red canoe.

"The search was described as like looking for a needle in a haystack by rescuers.

"But today Humber Coastguards said the canoeist and his craft were still missing and hopes were fading."

Mr Darwin was working as a prison officer at Holme House Prison in Stockton at the time.

The sea off Seaton CarewHe and his wife, a doctor's receptionist, had moved to Seaton Carew with their two dogs before his disappearance and he said he hoped to retire there.

It is believed the couple owned two adjoining homes.

Sky's North of England correspondent Gerard Tubb has found that Mrs Darwin moved abroad recently.

Neighbour Alec Dixon told him: "Anne had been on holiday early this summer and came back saying how much she liked it and was thinking of moving away.

"We think it may have been Australia though we are not sure.

"A few weeks later the furniture removals men came and she was gone. She didn't say goodbye or leave a forwarding address. She just seemed to vanish.

"They owned two adjoining Victorian terrace houses. They lived in one and John said he had plans to do up the other one. But that obviously never happened."

A labourer working on the houses said: "The houses have been sold but we don't know where she has gone. She was here only a few weeks ago and then just went."

Missing man sparks media frenzy in Chineham
By Vicky O'Hare
Comment
THE country's media descended on a north Hampshire street today following a suggestion that the man who walked into a police station five years after going missing could be staying there.

Reporters and photographers from national newspapers and television news channels descended on Ajax Close in Chineham early this morning as it was thought that the son of John Darwin - who went missing in the North Sea five-and-a-half-years ago - was living in a house there.

Mr Darwin's shattered kayak was found on a beach near his Hartlepool home in March 2002 and, despite extensive searches involving coastguards and helicopters, the father-of-two was never found.

advertisement
It is believed that his son Anthony lives in Ajax Close with his wife and two children.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, described Anthony as a "lovely guy" and said he had lived in Ajax Close for about four years.

"He's got two kids and a wife and they pretty much keep themselves to themselves," she added.

John Darwin's wife Anne is believed to have emigrated to Australia in the past year.

Mr Darwin, who was 51 when he went missing, was working as a prison officer before his disappearance.

A spokesman for Cleveland Police said: "The family have been informed. We have no account of what has happened in the last five years. He walked into a police station and said I think I am a missing person'.

"The guy cannot remember anything about what has happened or why he has come forward.

"He has no memory at all. He has obviously been somewhere for the last five years and a lot of questions need answering."

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said Mr Darwin was not held in custody.

It is believed that Mr Darwin's other son lives in Berkshire.

Yes it definietely is intriguing. We need more info on it. Did they pay out insurance on his "death" ? I wonder if anyone else was involved in his "disapearance" ? He was a prison officer, maybe he was "recruited" by tptb, because I mean there are alot of freemasons in that line of work. Just me thinking aloud with my conspiracy head on lol :D

A man who reappeared five years after it was thought he had drowned at sea while canoeing has been arrested.
John Darwin was presumed dead after the remains of his canoe were found washed up on a beach in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool, Teesside, in March 2002.

The 57-year-old walked into a London police station at the weekend, saying he did not remember where he had been.

The arrest came as the Daily Mirror published a photo alleging it showed Mr Darwin and his wife, Anne, in Panama. The newspaper reported that a photo of the Darwins was apparently taken last year in an apartment rented through the firm Move to Panama.

There has been no independent verification of the Mirror's photo

Absolutely, I don't believe any of this story, it comes across as fake and a complete setup. The reason? If the couple had schemed to fraudulently claim Insurance, as they say the wife did. Why risk exposure by turning up with a cock and bull story about the lost 5 years and amnesia? How did they know where to find his wife so quickly?
In todays news a photo showing the couple has been revealed. Where did it come from?

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/topstories/2007/12/06/the-game-is-up-anne-darwin-89520-20209991/

It's the same with the Liverpool teacher and the teddy bear story. I think that was a complete fabrication too.

Obviously, the aliens who abducted him brought him back to visit his wife. :)

But now, after reading the above story, the abduction theory seems to contain an element of truth.

If he had been microchipped, this would NEVER have happened! I'm sure the banks in Britain and Panama would agree.

Also, the mainstream media are now asking how that man managed to leave the country and get back in again without being found out. Again, the answer is a microchip or at least a biometric passport.

I think your right steevo! Why would Darwin just walk into a police station after 5 years? The Daily Mail claims, he handed himself in so he could reunite with his sons, couldn't they have kept hush and kept their little secret between just them?

James Whale has just been talking on his radio show and saying something like "why is the media so obsessed with the canoe story when the troops are fighting the most vicious battles since WW2 and also whilst there are hostages being held in Iraq, but we hear nothing virtually about that ? Why is the front page of every newspaper about the canoe ?"

"Why ?" is definitely the correct question.

Also James Whale was saying something like "the war is going on because America is the biggest exporter of weapons closely followed by Britain. I am aware that because I have said this, that "they" will probably try to stop me having a radio show but I will continue broadcasting from my bedroom if necessary".

James Whale is on top form tonight, but let's hope he doesnt go the same way as his former colleague Mike Dickin who died in a road accident soon after he said that Diana was murdered and he also had spoken out against the war.

EDIT : James Whale angrily just broadcast a message to the politicians and it was "WAKE UP!!!"

This story is sounding and looking rediculous. Yesterday, we were shown footage of Anne Darwin sitting in her plane seat looking out of the window, and occasionally at the individual who was recording her. All doom and gloom indeed. Half a minute later, she was again shown supposedly on the same plane, but it looked like she was sitting on the opposite side to previous film. Very curious.

Take a look at the armed guards in the photo on this link.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/topstories/2007/12/10/anne-darwin-dream-life-in-ruins-89520-20227862/ (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/topstories/2007/12/10/anne-darwin-dream-life-in-ruins-89520-20227862/)

If you click on the other links from this page you may also see the rediculous beared that the husband grew for disguise when he supposedly took a new identity. The beared is very Charles Darwinish.

In one picture printed in the tabloid I was convinced that it was false, but I may be wrong on this.

LONDON (Reuters) - A British man, who is facing fraud charges after he "returned from the dead" five years after going missing, had grown a beard and used an assumed name to hide the fact he was still alive, police said Monday.

John Darwin, 57, walked into a London police station last week claiming amnesia after apparently drowning at sea in a canoeing accident five years ago, sparking days of international media coverage.

Cleveland Police in northeast England issued a photo of Darwin with a straggly beard and appealed for information from anyone who might have known him under the name John Jones.

Earlier Monday Darwin was remanded in custody until December 14 at Hartlepool Magistrates Court charged with obtaining money by deception and making a false declaration to get a passport.

Police said they had also started questioning his wife Anne, 55, who they arrested on suspicion of fraud Sunday following her return from Panama, where she had recently moved.

Detective Superintendent Tony Hutchinson told reporters that Mrs Darwin was cooperating with police. "She's not saying 'no comment' to every question," he said.

Hutchinson said there was nothing to suggest that couple's sons were anything other than victims of the suspected deception, adding that he felt "dreadfully sorry" for them.

"They have believed for the past five years their father is dead," said Hutchinson.

"Now they find out that not only is he alive, but he has been arrested. And they now find out from the newspapers that their mother knew that their father was alive."

The sons said last week they wanted no further contact with their parents after their mother told newspapers a photo of her and her husband taken together in Panama last year was genuine.

Hutchinson said the motive for Darwin's reappearance and earlier disappearance remained unknown.

He said Darwin's sons could not identify any event which could have triggered the disappearance, but said police would investigate whether there were financial issues.

International coverage of the case had resulted in "countless calls" to police with information about the couple as well as emails from Spain and the Caribbean, Hutchinson said.

He appealed for the flow of information to continue.

"We need to know where Mr and Mrs Darwin have been both in Europe and North and South America.

"We need to know who they have been with and we need to know what they have been doing."

Anne Darwin had had reported her husband missing in 2002 when he failed to return home after canoeing in the North Sea near their home in Hartlepool, northeast England.

A few weeks later the shattered remains of his red kayak were discovered. A coroner declared Darwin dead in 2003 after a police inquiry.
