At least 21 people have been killed in Egypt by a suspected suicide bomber who targeted Christians as they emerged from a church following a service to mark the New Year.
Police initially said the blast was caused by a car packed with explosives which was parked outside the Saints Church in the northern city of Alexandria.
But the interior ministry later said the explosion was more likely to be by a suicide bomber on foot and there were indications of "foreign elements..."
The Governor of Alexandria, Adel Labib, accused al Qaeda of planning the bombing, a group called the Islamic State of Iraq.
The interior ministry said the blast happened just after midnight in front of the church after a Mass to see in the New Year.
A total of 43 people were hurt in the bombing and it is claimed the blast damaged a mosque near the church and eight Muslims were among the wounded.
Following the Alexandria attack, a witness said: "This is a scene from Baghdad."
Riot Police used tear gas to disperse protestS and dozens of officers surrounded the area to prevent a repeat of the unrest between Christians and Muslims.

A lone suicide bomber from Iraq with links to 'al Qaeda' travels on foot to a Church on New Years Eve and murders 21 people, injures 43 others, blows a car to smithereens and kills fellow Muslims in the process, to kick-start a 'Clash of Civilizations.' That must have been a helluva big suicide-belt! :confused:
