Lovely chaps.

It's quite a grisly film. There is far worse to come. A jaguar eating a man's face. Ritual sacrifice. Beheadings. Spear impalement.
All sorts.
Great film though IMO. It redeemed Gibson to me after his pointless 2hr "Jesus got beat up" epic.
But gruesome as. :)
eeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwwwwwwww thanks guys i am off to locate my earmuffs and blinkers, i cannot watch ER without throwing up, i hate the sight of blood

yes apocalypto is a good movie.
you need to learn to be a man, nuit.
I have had this vid sitting in my library for about nine months and have not watched it yet.
History is extremely violent and sickening. I am not sure that I need to watch it to see what went on in graphic detail.
i would rather keep my food in my stomach and be a wuss thank you

It's not really a historical film. It's more of an action film with a prophecy/mystery angle - Total Recall set in the Mayan jungle if you like :)
I can't recommend it enough. I love it. Saw it at the cinema, and I NEVER go to the cinema. Last time I did before this was ten years ago.

Mel Gibson certainly has his own style its not always about the story and suff its about the realism and capturing moments....
It is a fantastic film as Was "Passion Of The Christ" (even though I don't buy the who thing)
but Apocalypto is defo one for people who don't mind dark stuff... there are some part of the film that pretty much show hell on earth...
It clearly shows them holding up the heart to their "god" "Kulkukan" (spelling)
... so many killed in the name of him and in honour of him... where the hell did all that come from!!??
As real as the film is ... and as much as the ending does kind of bring the whole 2012 thing into it a little ..with out bringing it up... You have to ask your self what real stuff was left out as MG is a bit of a Christian.

Excellent post. But don't give away the ending to the folks here who haven't seen it...it's incredible when it happens.
As for what he left out, is there a DVD extras disc or section?
MG...a bit of a Christian...that's an understatement.
That's like saying Jaws was a bit peckish!
He's a raving anti-semite for one thing.

Hells bells.. If I woulda been Vincente Fox that year that it came out, I woulda had Gibson's heart for dinner!
Those ain't no Mayans! They're Aztecs!
I'm still a big Gibson fan tho.. Sure his heart would taste sweet with chipotle sauce.

Gday nuit and all, a while ago I had a thread about apocalypto talking about a few subliminals that were in it. You might wanna check it out:

btw, I found out that swirl red and white unbrella that he's holding symbolises blood letting, as I've found from research.

When watching this film, I have noticed something symbolic during the rituals, where the blow to the heart was timed perfectly with the victim's fearful eyes locked with the king's cold gaze.
Reminds me of DI's description of how rituals are done with the victim in fear and eyes fixed upon the perp.
Also, the eclipse is symbolic of how these people worshipped the sun and felt powerless without its presence. ;)

That would be IMO his 'pointless' 2hr 'Jesus was murdered by the jews' epic, no?

i think the movie has sum islamic influences in it...
as sum do belive the chosen one will come at the time of the eclipse and sum muslims do also belive that he will emerge from a cave...
if i was the main character once that jaguar had been killed, i would have gone back for the itty bitty baby one. What a cool present that would have been for his kiddy

I can certainly understand why the Jewish population reacted, although I also think they overracted.

You're addicted to pets! ;)
think it would be cool to have a little panther, jaguar, tiger or lion to lie on the rug in front of the fire. Could catch the sparks from the fire and save them burning my rug.Would also be more effective than my german shepherd for potentially detering burgalars

Just watched this film I think it is just about the most brutal film i have ever seen.
Pure naked human brutality, and it is extrememly effect. made me very anxious for a couple of days after watching it... some very effective programing going on in that film!
Was entirely engrossed in it tho; superb camera/direction and I was sympathetic to all the characters, fantastic acting.

just about the worst film i've ever seen, i was ill for days after watching it, and it is without doubt one of the films that i would never watch again.
The sub-titles made the film even more nauseating – and I felt although it had some spectacular cinematic sequences, the film was just condensed negativity from start to finish.
The only worse film, imo, is Gladiator, which again made me physically ill after watching it, and i had a hard time getting through it and focusing on what the actors were saying.

I actually agree with you! Which is why i think it is a brilliant film - while i was watching it i kept thinking 'what f*cked up kind of programming is this?? I agree also it was deeply deeply negative, almost suffocatingly so; the film made me very very anxious, I had dreams about it that night; and i could not stop thinking about it for days after; i was still quite 'anxious' for another day or two after watching it. So yes, i think for both of us it induced actual physical reaction!
might watch it again - not sure... I admire it for its craftsmanship; I identified with the characters right away, i fell for the hook yes i did! ;) so when they were brutalised for the rest of the film I felt it!
I would have left the film very happy if I'd stopped after the first 20mins, was really enjoying that!!
(The one major historical problem is that they are representing Columbus there aren't they? or is that Cortes? Cos according to the hisrotical record Columbus never set foot on the mainland, he visited some of the West Indies (poss Jamaica/Haiti/Barbados then back to Spain... can't be arsed to wiki it...)
Not one I would recomend to anyone without a strong disposition and certainly not minors!!

True indeed. The Maya civilization as a whole went into major decline after the Toltecs of central Mexico invaded parts of the Yucatan, most notably Chichen Itza (a maya/toltec city). And this was roughly around the 10th or
11th century. But the Movie seems to be taking place judging by the ending in the early 15th century (1519) when the Spanish first started setting foot in that region of Mexico. This is kind of confusing like you pointed out. Im sure somebody must of pointed this out to Gibson, but I guess not..lol

Which is such an obvious point if so much detail has gone into the rest of the movie; makes me think that the movie is a metaphor/vehicle for a subliminal message; Gibson doesn't really try to tell a truthful historical record; it is a fantasy story as allegory, like Grimms fairy tales .
But of what I don't know?? Brutality, negativity and despair? Very dark adn oppressive.
