This headstone marks the location of Sarah Symonds's grave in Bible Hill Cemetery. Grave robbers dug up her coffin and her remains sometime between Oct. 30 and Nov. 2.

After she died in 1824 at the age of 30, Sarah Symonds rested in an out-of-the-way cemetery in the small town of Hillsborough, N.H., for more than 180 years.

But sometime around Halloween her sleep was disturbed. Someone dug up her coffin and her remains, leaving behind only a few shards of wood, a meticulously dug hole, and a mystery for the local police.

"It was dug in a very strange manner. It's perfect," said Hillsborough Police Chief Brian Brown. "You'd have to see it. The sides are all squared. The bottom's level."

"We just don't have any answers right now," he said.

The grave robbers hit the Bible Hill Cemetery sometime between Oct. 30 and Nov. 2, Brown said. He said police were considering a number of theories, including the possibility that the body was unearthed by members of a Satanic cult.

Symonds was born March 29, 1794, and died June 18, 1824. She never married. Little else is known about her, said Gilman Shattuck, 80, a resident active in the local historical society who researched Symonds's life after the news broke.

The cemetery is a small plot in an isolated area with a stone wall around it. It contains about 40 graves, the oldest of which dates to the late 18th century.

Most of the graves are from the first or second decade of the 19th century, and a few are from the late 19th century, Shattuck said.

Brown said police in the town of about 6,000 people are puzzled because grave robbers looking for valuables wouldn't have any reason to dig so neatly and would likely try to fill the grave to cover up their crime.

"You're not going to waste time to square the corners," he said. "Why leave it open? Why dig it so meticulously? . . . Somebody obviously wanted us to find it at some point."

Police hope someone will step forward to shed some light on the case, he said.

You can see two figures in the 'face area' as well. Even a third being buried.
Just shows whats wrong with momentary video or photograph evidence. It cannot be trusted at this level anyway.

Brian Allen has an old picture of a strange coffin in his new book. The coffin is made of cast iron plates and it's sealed with rivets. It was common up to the 19th Century in many parts of Scotland to be burried in such a casket. The reason: to prevent grave robbery. In those days medical schools and universities used to steal bodies for experiments and training and so these armoured caskets were often used in the areas around these establishments.

The thing is that Brian has discovered that armoured caskets were also used in the Highlands, in the remotest areas, hundreds of miles from any university. Why? To prevent grave robbery yes, but not by people, by the Fairies! Fairies are simply what we nowadays call aliens.

Hi celine! I have to ask! why would they bother to rivet these coffins, when obviosly the aliens were above their technology of the time? If people did know about these fairys or aliens they must have known they had more powers than them, don't make sense:confused:

I'm not sure; I'm reading Brian's other book at the moment, but I'll pick up a copy of his new one soon. It could be because they didn't understand the fairies'/aliens' full power, but only knew that these beings existed. Also they thought that they would at least make the effort to stop them even if it didn't work! It's a human reflex; a bit like holding up your hands to your face to protect yourself. It's something you'd do even if you were about to be hit by a speeding train, even though in those circumstances, holding up your hands would do no good!

The armoured coffin might also be just one part of the protection; it might have been combined with spells ar prayers. Higlanders are a mysterious people, and what remains of their culture shows that magickal practices were widepread in those days.
