I don't know if this as been posted before, if it has I apologise. But has anyone tryed the natuaraly grown herb Stevia as a sweetener? I have read that it is used widely in Japan and Brazil. And is a very safe.

Yes, I did a fair bit of reading on it and decided to try it. I don't use sugar in tea or coffee but sometimes feel the need for a sweetener in smoothies and protein drinks. I sure as shit am not using any of their artificial poisons. I use the liquid and only need a couple of drops.

And is a very safe. I use stevia on occasion. It tastes a little of licorice. It doesn't have that "smooth" body that sugar or honey gives. It is obviously what Monsanto (blast their unholy name!) was trying to emulate with aspartame, failing miserably.

Xylitol (say the "X" like a "Z") is the best natural sugar of all. In fact it helps prevent tooth cavities. It tases REALLY good - just like ordinary table sugar -but it doesn't create a rapid rise in blood-sugar levels like ordinary sugar.

Its a pity they charge an arm and a leg for it, and this is why you don't see it in natural toothpastes as a sweetener. However, you can buy it from some pharmacies and some health food shops (it comes in clear granules) and you can use it to make your own mouthwash. I use a combo of Xylitol, natural peppermint oil, grapefuit seed extract, fresh spring water and a little oil of oregano (or tea Tree) to make a really high quality 'chem-free' antibacterial mouthwash...its a VERY refreshing, minty taste explosion that's also good for the health of your teeth!

I have some stevia, it's pretty good. I use organic sugar in tea or coffee now though. Other than that I don't use sugar.

Used Stevia exclusively for 5 years now. I love the Stevia taste in my coffee or tea so much better than sugar that when I am stuck somewhere that I don't have any with me I use sugar and it tastes terrible.

The health reasons is why i switched to Stevia and it makes a big difference for my lifestyle - sugar is very acidic and I have the condition (as most in our western world) where my blood pH is overly acidic. In fact some micro-biologists suggest that the inbalance in blood pH may in fact be the foundation of all disease. Wouldn't surprise me that something this simple could have some truth.

Hi thank you all for the replies. As I am now a diabetic, I need some sort of sweetener, that isnt poison. I looked at another sweetener that is Surcalose based, only to read that it has not been tested properly. Now there's a supprize!!!!! Look's like the FSA are doing a great job as usauall [not]..... Just like they did with Aspartame.

Are you talking about Splenda? There's an interesting story behind Splenda.

In short Splenda has been approved for use in Canada since the early 90's without problems but it wasn't until it was approved for use in the USA that the negative press started to surface which I have ignored as propoganda. To my mind the negative press about Splenda was instigated by anyone who stood to lose revenue to Tate & Lyle who had brought a safe sweetener to the table.

It's no different to the hammering that low carb diets have taken over the years by those who stood to lose the most money. There's a great deal of misinformation out there regarding low carb diets and Splenda.

Hi Jeffangel, yes I was talking about Splenda. Thank's for the link, I have also read about, so I have been and got some. I'm also going to try Xylitol, which seem's only available in the big super market's. Have problem trying to find Stevia here in the uk, as I would like to try yhat as well. But I will keep looking.

I believe it's illegal to sell in the UK & some parts of Europe :( For something that's natural & unharmful they've now banned it's use. Funny how Aspartame isn't!!

Hi Lookfar, I have'nt tryed looking for it as yet, but you are probably right. Probably has other health benifits that are good for you. So the drug companys will lose out on. And as we all know Aspartame is notthing but PURE F****ING POISON.

grow your own
plant originates from Paraguay
its latin name is stevia rebaudiana
in france its legale to grow your own but not to sell
i think to grow in england will need a green house for the non summer months

however, health and political controversies have limited stevia's availablility in many countries; for example, the United States banned it in the early 1990s.

"bumble" if you want ill send you some from here (france)

this is where I buy mine - I buy the 1/2 Kilo size and it lasts me more than 1 year. I use it for coffee and tea (and I drink a lot of both) . I never use sugar if I can use Stevia. I like the white powder the best as it is very strong so just need a little bit. Again, I have used Stevia for over 5 years now and nothing is better (for me at least).
