A police station has also disappeared into the giant 100-metre-deep fissure.

The pit opened up on Friday, February 23, emitting foul odours. Witnesses said the ground shook before it appeared.

A 500 metre perimeter has been cordoned off around the hole. Authorities had apparently suspected something was wrong with the site before the sinkhole appeared.

The bodies of three people, a father and his two teenage children, have been recovered from its depths. Locals say more people are missing although rescue workers have not been able to confirm that.

Officials have blamed recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main for the tragedy.

LOL! :D

Smell Trouble?

In a vast underground construct called Bogeydom live the blissfully disgusting Bogeys, who spend their days wallowing in their own filth. Come night time, they venture “up there,” into the world of the humans.

So, there was a police station there with a huge, hidden cavern underneath it?

Hmmm ...

And, it seems there has been another violent incident involving Guatemalan police recently. Four were murdered who were said to have participated in the assassination of some Salvadoran politicians. See:
http://www.cbc.ca/world/story/2007/02/26/prison-riot-070226.html

Makes me wonder if there was a connection some how.

And, this was not the only sinkhole incident in Guatemala. Another news story mentions a sinkhole into "a massive cavern" under another area. See:

if it was from a ruptured main did they find any water leaking anywhere? Obviously there had to be the smell from the sewage.

could just be what it is, right? what would be the point of opening up such a hole? How deep does it go btw?

It's over 300 feet deep. And, from the looks of the photos, it appears that it connects with a large cavern too.

A leaking water or sewage line did not cause that!
