Three people have been killed and at least a dozen homes have been swallowed up by a giant sinkhole that has appeared in Guatemala City.

A police station has also disappeared into the giant 100-metre-deep fissure.

The pit opened up on Friday, February 23, emitting foul odours. Witnesses said the ground shook before it appeared.

A 500 metre perimeter has been cordoned off around the hole. Authorities had apparently suspected something was wrong with the site before the sinkhole appeared.

The bodies of three people, a father and his two teenage children, have been recovered from its depths. Locals say more people are missing although rescue workers have not been able to confirm that.

Officials have blamed recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main for the tragedy.
