I liked this passage I just read in a book by Deepak Chopra called 'Power Freedom and Grace. I thought I would share it:)
Quoted from Chapter 6 'What is the key to lasting happiness?'
What would life be if there wasn't this contrast? Life would be dull. Have you ever been to a movie where everything is always fine? It's boring!!
The whole of creation is contrast, tension, divine discontent. If there were only truth, goodness, harmony and beauty, the universe would expand and disappear. There has to be something to hold it back. If there were only destructive inertial forces, then the universe would rapidly burn itself up into the heat death of absolute zero. It would collapse into a black hole- shveeeet!and disappear. So there is both otherwise this world would not exist.
All experience in life is by contrast because the universe creates through contrast: light and dark, pleasure and pain, birth and death, hot and cold. if there were no contrast there would be no experience. The is pleasure because there is pain, there is joy because there is sorrow, there is hot because there is cold, there is wealth because there is poverty, there is courage because there is fear, and there is love because there is the opposite of love. Unless we know both, one is meaningless and cannot be experienced.
There is a saying in India: "A blind man from birth cannot know what darkness is because he has never experienced light"
The mind is made up of opposing energies that spark and create the fire of life. Inside us is bothe the divine and the diabolocal, the sinner and the saint, the sacred and the profane. Inside us is forbidden lust and unconditional love, the beatitude of paradise, and the dark night of the soul. We are all these things because we are the field of all possibilities. Just imagine a world of pollyannas. Would you really want to be in that world?
When we are standing in the light, then we have a shadow. If we dont have a shadow then we are standing in darkness. The shadow is the part of us that we're ashamed of, that we don't want people to know about. it's that part of us that we hide away in the closet. The shadow is dark, it's secretive, it's primitive, it's shrouded in mythology. And if we ignore the shadow, it tends to say Well, I'm going to embarrass you, I want you to notice me!
When you exhibit so-called postive and negative qualities, you are not flawed; you are complete. When you are comfortable with your shadow, when you embrace your shadow because this is how the infinite conciousness made you, then you are attractive beyond measure, and your life is an adventure.
Love to all
