Officials: Government failed to react to FAA warning
CNN, 17 Sep 2001
http://www.cnn.com/2001/US/09/16/inv.hijack.warning/
Just revisited this piece of hype. So many lies and distortions:
1. Federal officials did not "fail to heed a warning" to evacuate nor did they only begin
evacuation "after" the plane struck the Pentagon. They were evacuated from White House,
Capitol and Pentagon before it hit, reported on Channel 8 news here. I know when it hit, it
shook my windows. Local news interviewed people on the White House lawn being
evacuated who saw a plane flying overhead and asked if it was the hijacked plane. They were
told it was the President's "Doomsday" plane. If so, who the hell was in it?
2. "The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado was informed by the FAA at 9:25 a.m. that American Airlines flight 77 might have been hijacked and appeared headed toward Washington." This is a full hour after NORAD knew that all four planes were hijacked, and we knew here shortly after the second tower was hit that Flight 77 was aimed at DC. I knew and NORAD didn't????
3. "Military officials at NORAD ordered fighter jets from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia to intercept the flight, but neither the FAA, NORAD, nor any other federal government organization made any effort to evacuate the buildings in Washington." If they lie twice will it make it true?
4. "Officials at the Pentagon said that no mechanism existed within the U.S. government to notify various departments and agencies under such circumstances." If I wasn't laughing so hard I'd cry. Come on!!! So in other words, nobody gets warned but the Pentagon? Have they ever heard of a FEDEX phone? No mechanism exists. Or do they mean they turned off the
phone lines between departments like they did 11/22/63?
5. Quoted verbatim timeline:
8:44 a.m.: Otis Air National Guard Base in Mass. orders to fighters scrambled.
8:46 a.m.: American Airlines flight 11 strikes the World Trade Center's north tower.
8:52 a.m.: Two F-15 Eagles take off from Otis ANG Base in effort to intercept hijacked plane(s) after first plane has struck the World Trade Center.
9:02 a.m.: United Airlines flight 175 strikes the World Trade Center's south tower (F-15 fighter jets from Otis ANG Base are still 70 miles away.)
9:25 a.m.: FAA notifies NORAD that United flight 77 may have been hijacked.
9:27 a.m.: (approximate time) NORAD orders jets scrambled from Langley Air Force Base in Virginia to head to intercept United Airlines flight 77.
9:35 a.m.: Three F-16 Fighting Falcons take off from Langley AFB headed toward Washington area.
9:37 a.m.: American Airlines flight 77 is lost from radar screens.
9:38 a.m.: American Airlines flight 77 strikes the Pentagon.
9:49 a.m.: F-16 fighter jets arrive over Washington, D.C. to perform Combat Air Patrol (CAP) over city. (The fighters broke the sound barrier and traveled supersonic at 720 knots to Washington, making the approximately 130 miles in 14 minutes.) OK, granted something fundamentally wrong here. But if some is right we can see that NORAD Otis is following procedure however belated by being ordered to scramble to intercept before first tower is hit. Scramble time is recorded at 8 and 7 minutes respectively from time of orders. Otis planes are said to be still 70 miles away after 10 minutes in the air. How far is Otis from NYC? Someone needs to do this math. What was NORAD waiting for from 8:25 when first notified of hijackings until 8:44when it reportedly ordered planes scrambled? The turn around of Flight 77 happened well before 9:25. Why are they speculating that late?
They finally tell Langley to get in the air two minutes after that. The second plane hit at 9:02 (9:05?) in New York. Flight 77 was announced headed to DC shortly after that on local news. NORAD asleep at the switch twice?
I was also told that the Otis pilots got to NYC too late but then turned to target Flight 77, and knew its course. They were called back to base instead. This was 9:05, latest. Cheney and Bush order shoot down "moments after" this according to press reports, not 40 minutes later. Why order shoots downs when everything is finished?
6. Note that Flight 77 is said to be lost to radar just before the crash. Lost to radar when it comes into the most heavily restricted and radar saturated area in the US??? Like the little piper cub that hit the White House was "not on the radar" in first reports, then found on the logs later? These are lies, cover story. The Pentagon was struck at 9:48, not 9:38, which means the
Langley planes had ten more minutes. It took them 24 minutes to get to DC then, for 130 miles. Supersonic? The late official notice on all these hijackings is incredible. Flight 93 noticed off course only at 9:16? This is an elaborately skewered script here, meant to cover-up the stand down I think. It fits nothing I know or saw elsewhere of the events.

Pentagon Missile Defense Failure
Remember Star Wars? Do you remember the Pentagon's Strategic Defense Initiative to build a massive missile defense system that raised so much controversy during the Reagan and first Bush years?
130 billion of our tax dollars were poured into developing that system. It was designed to detect and intercept missiles fired from an unknown destination traveling at well over 10 times the speed of a commercial airliner, and to shoot them down in 15 minutes or less, before they reached their US targets.
According the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) website, "a defensive system may need to hit a warhead smaller than an oil drum that is traveling above the atmosphere at speeds greater than 13,000 miles per hour." The CBO report states that missile defense and intercept systems must take down an ICBM in a matter of minutes or it is all over.
You may remember that before 9/11, there were a number of tests of the Pentagon's missile defense systems. Some tests failed, while others succeeded. But there is an important question here. If these sophisticated military systems were designed to detect missiles fired from unknown locations at over 13,000 mph and shoot them down in mere minutes, why on 9/11 could they not detect any one of the four large airliners traveling at a mere 600 mph, especially when two of them were known to be lost for over 40 minutes before they crashed?
This question applies especially to Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon. The first plane hijacking on 9/11 was reported at about 8:20 AM (see NY Times article), well over an hour before Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon at 9:38. According to the Times article, Flight 77 was reported lost at 8:56 A.M., 42 minutes before it crashed. Even if the FAA radar systems completely failed and FAA officials failed to alert the military, all military leaders certainly knew within minutes that the World Trade Center had been hit at 8:46. By 9:03, when the second tower was hit, they certainly knew there were big problems.
How is it possible that the Pentagon's highly touted missile detections systems could not locate Flight 77 in the 42 minutes it was known to be lost before it crashed into the heart of the defense system of the U.S.? The missile detection systems did not depend on FAA radar and were programmed to pick up any unaccounted for objects and raise alarms immediately, as mentioned on the CBO website.
Here's another related question. Why was the Pentagon's billion-dollar missile defense system such a hot topic in the media before 9/11, yet we've heard almost nothing about it since? Could it be that there are elements in the government and military who don't want people to think about questions like those asked here? And an even bigger question is why isn't our media asking these questions and more?
Why is it that the 9/11 Commission budget was far less than the budget allotted to the Challenger space shuttle disaster or even the Monica Lewinsky affair? The 9/11 commission was originally allotted only $3 million. Eventually, after much begging and haggling, the commission was given $15 million. Yet a CNN article lists the cost of the Lewinsky investigation at $30 million. A Los Angeles Times article states the cost of the Columbia space shuttle disaster investigation was $175 million.
How could 9/11 – the greatest disaster in American history – be given such a small budget for investigation? Why didn't the Pentagon want to aggressively investigate the greatest failure ever in U.S. defenses? And why did both the president (see CNN article) and vice-president (see Newsweek article) initially oppose any investigation at all?
Why aren't we, the public, asking these questions and demanding answers? It's not too late. Let us take action now and seek answers to these vital questions. Anyone confirm more detailed description?
Navigating the Pentagon
Here's a physical description of the Pentagon: it's a five sided, five story (plus two basements) building containing a large central courtyard and five concentric rings of offices.
Floors: numbered 1 through 5, except for the basements, which are labeled M (for Mezzanine) and B (for Basement). Note that most people would think of the second floor of the Pentagon as its "main" floor.
Concentric rings: labeled A (innermost) through E (outermost) except in the basement, where there are also ring segments labeled F and G. "E" Ring offices are the only ones with outside views and are generally occupied by senior officials.
Office numbers: office numbers go clockwise around each of the rings, and have two parts: a nearest-corridor number (1 to 10) followed by a bay number (00 to 99), so office numbers range from 100 to 1099. These corridors radiate out from the central courtyard, with corridor 1 beginning with the Concourse's south end. Each numbered radial corridor intersects with the corresponding numbered group of offices (for example, corridor 5 divides the 500 series office block).
Radial corridors: numbered 1 through 10, starting with the radial corridor off the south end of the concourse.
Thus office number 3E210 is on the third floor, in the E Ring, about two tenths of the way around the E Ring in the clockwise direction, starting from the middle of the concourse. The radial corridors go between the concentric rings (and thus radiate outward from the central courtyard) are found where two adjacent sides of the building come together. Oddly enough, the radial corridor numbering and the room numbering are connected. For instance, if you walk down corridor 7 to its intersection with the D Ring, you will find that offices on the D Ring to your left are numbered in the seven hundreds and that offices on the D Ring to your right are numbered in the seven hundreds.
The Concourse: The Concourse is on the second floor of the Pentagon. It sits where the E Ring would be on the southeast side of the building. There is a large Metrobus station about 200 yards outside the building next to the Concourse. The top of the escalators to the Pentagon Metrorail station is about 100 yards from the Concourse building entrance. This entrance is now the main entrance for visitors to the Pentagon. The Concourse itself is a mini-shopping mall located inside the Pentagon. Obviously the shopping there is only available those who can get into the Pentagon
