CHINA last night launched its first lunar probe, just weeks after Japan put one in orbit over the moon in another leap forward for Asia's undeclared space race.

India plans to send its own lunar probe into space in April.

Chang'e 1 took off from a launch centre in Sichuan province for what was slated to be a one-year expedition.

The project's goal is to analyse the chemical and mineral composition of the lunar surface.

The probe will use stereo cameras and X-ray spectrometers to map 3D images of the surface and to study the moon's dust.

The Americans are planning and building the equipment at the moment for their return to our nearest neighbor The Russians are planning and building the equipment to make their first manned landing.

Helium 3 is what they are after in my mind and the Russians have said so publicly.

Many people will be bracing themselves for some Earth-shattering revellation about how the Apollo LM descent stage and equipment left at Tranqulity base in not there because the moon landings were fake. I wouldn't hold your breath! there's no way any rocket's going to be allowed any where near the moon unless NASA has its assurances that its secret is safe. i said as much when the Clementine mission was launched.

If the Chinese space agency decides not to go along with NASA then there's several things that could happen. The probe could be destroyed or alternatively, the Tranquility Base detrius could be planeted. It wouldn't be hard to make simple basla-wood models of the LM and rover etc and plant them on the moon.

Unfortunately even lots of common folk making it to the moon is no obstacle to NASA, the bollocks masters! They can plant any evidene necessary. After all, the can surround Tranqulity Base with a red rope, like other museum exhibits to stop people disturbing it. Who want Neil Armstrong's "small step trampled over by those of tourists! They'll say it's so that "this historical first outpost of humanity on another world can be preserved in its original state" and also that nobody can get close enough to see that the LM descent stage is made from balsa wood and plaster of Paris!:D

The chinese satellite wouldn't be able to picture the hardware if they wanted too. There not there to take holiday snaps.

You dont know much about this do you? China has already launched a manned rocket into space.

They stopped going to the Moon when congress stopped the money. planned Apollo missions were cancelled and NASA had to concentrate on other things.

Do you know how many missions there were before they landed? The crew of Apollo 10 were only hundreds of feet from the surface. Is not like they said ok lets go to the moon and went.
