Dublin - Britain and Ireland are to end a passport-free travel arrangement between the two countries that has existed since the foundation of the Irish Free State in the early 1920s, The Irish Times reported Wednesday. The ending of the Common Travel Area between Britain and the Irish Republic is part of London's plan to set up electronic border controls by 2009, the report said.

Dublin was expected to follow suit with its own electronic border controls to track terrorist suspects, criminals and illegal immigrants.

There would be no requirement to use a passport for travel between British-administered Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.

Although people have been able to travel freely between Ireland and Britain without any documents since 1922, low-cost airlines like Ryanair have insisted on photo identification since the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States.

haha i wouldn't shut up in the queue going through security :D between passports being shown at all times, bottle of water, soya milk and juice taken off you, kids no more then 3 or 4 having to remove their belts etc or watching parents struggle to remove them rather it is all so annoying!

people are all so scared of authority.
it's sad to watch.

It's odd that as the EU creeps up on us everything it's supporters say it stands for, "unity", "togetherness" etc, is not happening. As nation states are atrophied and self-determination eroded, controls on travel and movement are getting tighter and tighter.
