Man, the comments underneath are 100 times more interesting than the article itself. I've plus-rated a few and suggest other forum users might want to do the same.
This is a mainstream newspaper and although the author acknowledges the symbology, doesn't at any time wonder why it is present. Some good links posted in the comments, too.
