‘Doors’ sculpture opens up surprise for visitors’ ears
Julie Janovsky, Tribune
Visitors to “The Doors” sculpture in downtown Scottsdale will soon be in for an audible surprise.
The 28-foot-tall public art, which consists of three huge wooden doors with interior kaleidoscopic effects, has become more interactive with a recent addition of a series of special audio components.
The sculpture’s new sound elements will debut at a free public reception at 5:30 p.m. today at the sculpture in front of P.F. Chang’s China Bistro on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and Camelback roads.
“The Doors,” created by Pennsylvania-based artist Donald Lipski, was privately commissioned by the Scottsdale Waterfront Commercial LLC and given to the Scottsdale Public Art Program.
The artwork, made of Brazilian hardwood and stainless steel, was erected in April. Colorado-based artist Jim Green, who has been creating the audio for the sculpture since the summer, said a motion sensor inside the sculpture is programmed to play a series of about 10 “sound episodes,” running between three to eight minutes. By early next year, Green said he expects to have a total of 25 audio experiences.
“I hope it creates questions and discussions about what it is,” said Green, who has worked with sound as an art medium for the past 25 years. He said he approached Lipski about adding audio elements to his work last December. He said Lipski agreed, with the caveat that the sounds wouldn’t be “immediately funny.”
Green experimented with repetitious sound phrases he described as mantras. He said he hopes each of the sound episodes, which range from a New York subway to an exotic forest, take people who step inside the sculpture’s doors on an audio journey.
“I want people to experience its mystery,” Green said.
