About an hour ago I was watching a clip on youtube about whirling dervishes. 5.30 in the morning so what else do you do? I decided to try it.
I raised my right hand upwards and the left one down, the baphomet pose wasn't lost on me when I realised what i was doing. They do this to channel the energy from god with the right hand and while whirling spread that energy out into the world with the left hand.
So I started turning. Not all the way round though, my feet were still just ym body moving. I went back and forth for a few times and I could feel something running down from the sky into my right hand and out of me downwards through the left.
Of course I thought it was pretty cool and for a moment I stood there contemplating what it might be. My mind was starting to wander, I was picturing myself (not intentionally) walking with what to me seemed to be an entity, not of this world, looking over me. I got the feeling it has been there for some time. Then I probably got the biggest case of goosebumps I've ever had in my life lol, over my head, down my back and of course my arms too. The hairs on my arms weren't just sticking they were getting as far away from my body as possible.
It only got weirder (Wyrder?) after I tried to laugh of the goosebumps outside my window there was a loud rukkus going on. I looked out and there were probably around 30+ Jackdaws and Magpies flying about near my window and in my garden right up close, maybe fighting i'm not sure. I shut the window incase one got in they were that close. They seemed to be something at my door which i couldn't see from the window so I went downstairs to see what it was and to shoo the birds away. And there in front of the door was a magpie on its back looking at me. I didnt know what to do to help it and after a moment it shut its eyes and froze. Kinda freaky knowing I was the last thing the bird saw given they are quite intelligent self aware creatures that have emotions.

So these 3 events which took place within moments of each other have got me thinking what it might mean, if anything. I've tried searching into the superstitions involved for the past hour but they mostly just repeat the 1 for sorrow 2 for joy... rhyme.
Does anyone know if there are any folktales or superstitions surrounding dead magpies on your doorstep or can make any sense of these events?
If you dont hear from me again then you can be safely assured I have died today.:rolleyes:

Thank you. The bird is still at my door, i read that magpies grieve for their dead and I can still hear magpies close by so I thought I should leave it there for a while. Once everything calms down outside I'll do as you suggest and bury the bird. :)

The word Magpie tells us a lot about the bird's nature, and symbolism associated with it."Mag" means "chatterer" and "pie" comes from "pied" meaning black and white.

Because the magpie is attracted to bright and shiny objects,it is associated with being a hoarder and a thief. It's clearly defined black and white markings have made it a symbol of the devil,in christian belief at least. This is because it refused to wear full mourning for the cruxifiction.Elsewhere it is viewed as a trickster, just like other members of the highly intelligent corvid family. This ambivolance is reflected in the old counting rhyme in which alternative verses are positive and negative, like the colouring of the bird itself. The devilish symbolism is exacerbated as the bird can even imitate the human voice,an alarming talent to superstitious minds. In Scotland it is said that the magpie has a drop of the devil's blood on it's tongue. Therefore it was important to appease the bird, ingratiating oneselves with it,greeting it with "good morning Mr Magpie" or doffing the cap.

In Scandanavian territories,it was believed that witches could shape shift into the form of a magpie,or could shrink down small enough to ride on their back's.In Norway the view is counteracted, where the bird is viewed favourably and given corn to eat at christmas. The magpies predilection with shiny objects means that it is linked to mirrors and reflections. In Japan a woman would view her husband's gift of a mirror with some suspicion. This is because of the belief the mirror could turn into a magpie, this bird then in turn spied on the wife on behalf of her husband.Even today the backs of some mirrors in japan are still decorated with the magpie symbol.

In Greece, the magpie was the attribute of the wine god Dionysus, wine loosens the tongue and causes people to chatter like the bird. This chattering gives us the name Gazette,a journal full of gossipy items, from the Italian for magpie,Gazza.
