'Dead' Harry statue goes on display

A controversial statue of a "dead" Prince Harry clutching a cameo locket of his late mother Princess Diana is going on public display.

The statue is intended as a memorial to honour those who are willing but unable to serve in Iraq, according to its creator, artist Daniel Edwards.

The memorial, entitled "Iraq War Memorial featuring the Death of Prince Harry, the Martyr of Maysan Province", will be unveiled at the Trafalgar Hotel in central London as part of the Bridge Art Fair.

The Prince is laid out before the Union Jack in the artwork, with pennies placed over his eyes, his unfired gun still holstered, with a desert vulture perched on his boot.

His head is earless, in reference to reports that militia leaders said they planned to send him back to his grandmother "without his ears".

A bronze casting of the Prince's "severed ears" will also be on display at the hotel and will go on sale on auction website eBay at a later date.

A website dedicated to the statue - www.princeharrymemorial.com - has attracted mixed reactions, some calling it "a work of genius", others saying it is in "very, very poor taste".

In May this year, the head of the British Army, General Sir Richard Dannatt, said the Prince would not be sent to Iraq because of "unacceptable risks" and a "number of specific threats" against him directly.

Mr Edwards, who is based in New York, said: "Prince Harry's spirit must have died the day they told him he couldn't serve. That's what this memorial is about."

The memorial will be on public display until Sunday.

And, that's their right not to care if they don't want to, I suppose. I just find it a very strange thing. It's a puzzle. It doesn't make any sense. All these cryptic clues. As one person pointed out, the statue DOES have ears, so then why does the description say it doesn't?

One more thing about this that convinces me it's about Diana, and NOT Paris, is the dog. Diana, goddess of the chase, is usually always depicted with a hunting dog or some kind of animal (much like Paris Hilton, whom usually has some kind of pet with her). Is this a backhanded slap at Diana?

His family had Nazi connections during the war, so who knows what they've been taught in private (also, the current royal family are of German origin). Maybe it just spilled over into the public eye. For me, I would never ever wear a Nazi symbol. It would just be so wrong, to me. But to him, apparently it didn't even register that there was anything wrong with it. It makes you wonder what impressions he has grown up with that allow him this mentality.
