Hi yesterday evening i had a terrible migraine, i knew one was coming as i tend to lose sight in my left eye (kind of like having a blind spot in my vision), this gradually got worse and i developed a stabbing headache then violently sick reapeatedly.
I used to get these when i was about 14/15 then they stopped and i have not had one since (until yesterday) and i am now 20.
I dont know if it was because i had over exerted myself yesterday as i had not slept much the night before and had a 2 hour exam, then had an intense exercise class in the evening. Shortly after leaving this the migraine came on.
When i used to get them i went to the doctors and they provided pills for when i felt one coming on (they never really did much) but i would like to find the root cause.
Is there anything that i can do to stop these happening?
Would be much appreciated :)

Your answer is in your question, look at your wording.

Headaches are most commonly symptoms of dehydration, allergies, and a lack of air.
Drink plenty of water to stay adequately hydrated, get enough fresh air and watch for high salt, high sugar, processed grains and junk foods.
It's that simple, want any more info just post/pm me.

How much MSG and MSG-Name-Alternatives do you eat? There's a lot of people, including myself, that have severe bodily responses to eating foods that have MSG added to them.
What did you eat yesterday?

thats a good idea. maybe if others share their migraine stories here we can all benefit.
yeah, this whole migraine thing is a bit of a mystery isnt it? i have done lots of reading over the years & never really found anything conclusive, maybe its because everyone has their own unique combinations of triggers?
please share your experiences with migraine here, especially if you have discovered what triggers them off.
my migraine always come on in the afternoon, sometimes they are gone by evening if a lie down with a damp cloth over my eyes(also cuts out the light), sometimes i'm puking by this time already! i don't think mine are linked to full moons.

Migraines, to me, seem like a build-up of electricity in the head. I used to get them myself between the age of 10 to 14, but I never had them again after getting my head banged on the floor in a fight. I still get the odd twinges and bolts of pain, but nothing that persists like they used to do.

Thats interesting about the electric bulid up, because migraines have a link with epilepsy (which some describe as a elec. build up & the fit being a release). i also had a large head bang when i was around 14-15yrs.

That chocolate thing...I hadn't heard of this before. Could it be people lacking Magnesium?

My migraines started about 10 years ago. I was so scared one evening when i experienced my first one.
My eyes just totally went weird, all i could see was black and yellow kind of zig zags is the only way i can describe it.
My head felt strange but not aching at all. The headache came the morning after..and my it was a sickening one.
The docs said it was migraines and gave me some pills.
My mums had them for years and recommended migraleve tablets which i keep on me now.
When i get the funny eyes i take them and lie down for a while....but i still get the headache next morning.
I now get 2 migraines a month. Just before menstruating and just after...like clockwork.
A friend said maybe its low oestrogen or something like that ( im 47)..
I will be reading this thread with interest to see how others cope with this..
Its a great idea to tell what experiences we have with migraines...it might help...

Many people report dehydration as a major factor. I have only had two real migraines in my life and both were hormone related.

Pls dont quote me on this, only trying to help, ok.
'New Age' type books... say that 'migraines' are caused by 'wrong thinking' - which i think they mean that you are worrying too much about this crappy life that we live in.
It may or may not be true. The people that go on about YCYOR may agree. After all, if u do create your own reality, then u r creating migraines just as much as you create health.
well, just what i think, worry and stress will cause all sorts of horrible pains etc to the human body... and migraines could be one of them.
Maybe worrying and stress is the cause.
I never get migraines or headaches, just other things like tummy upsets, and i know for sure that is definately stress. and horrible...
So, that is the best answer i can give. It could very well be Stress, dyhydration and you need more sleep. And more love.
A few people i knew had them really bad. They always went in a dark room , flannel over their eyes, they were in terrible pain, it must be so awful. One girl I knew used to bang her head on the walls, and then puked, and after a while felt better... eek. so i know it must be terrible to experience, altho i have never had a migraine.
I really hope u get better. I think it is the stress of life.

I get them in clusters, and usually around my time of ovulation, that's not going to apply to men, but this is hormonal and men have hormones too!
At this time if I get tired, stressed, skip breakfast, eat wheat products or dairy I will probably get a migraine. It starts off with a nausea, an odd taste in my mouth and frequesnt urination. Then then my vision starts to go funny, almost as if I was a bit drunk. I have read that this is called the "aura".
I then get a splitting headache, on occasions I have had migraines that are so severe they have lasted days and I have even had vomiting and the runs :(
I just avoid my triggers during ovulation time now.

I have been having migraine since I was 8, for me it is hormonal and occurs every month, I just learned to live with them now and take some drugs, go to sleep, wake up and it is usually much better. Only problem is the drugs make me a bit spaced out for a day.

What do you take for yours? I find cocodamol works, but I can only take it at bedtime.
I hate to "up the ante" but I suffer from what is known as "Cluster Headaches" I used to say to ppl they were migraines just so they would understand, but whereas a migraine may last a day, these cluster headaches can last any length of time, longest for me was 6 -8 weeks, most of the drugs don't touch them, unless you get them at the start, anyway when I wasn't feeling like blowing my brains out, or running my head under cold tap, I did some research on the internet, and there was a lot of evidence that pointed to Oxygen being a good thing to take at onset of the Pain.
I was amazed my doctor actually listened to me, then the next thing I know is I'm signing for an Oxygen cylinder at home, and as soon as I got it, I knew they were on the wane, but that was one of the worst starts to the year I've ever had, well into February before they went. It was horrendous

I am a man, I can't say for certain what triggers them, many things, I just wish they would do a little brain surgery (that's what THEY were doing) and cauterise a nerve which is touching an artery or vein.

unfortunately cocodamol doesn't touch mine. I used to use imigran injections as I vomited drugs back up, not been vomiting in a while now so can take it in tablet form, which although is still intense, it is nowhere near as bad as the side effects of the injections.
As said previously it can sometimes be allergy related and the most common trigger is dairy especially cheese. This video is interesting generally and he does speak about the effects of dairy in relation to migraines.

Interesting my migraines last for three to five days.
But I take Kapake or solpadol they leave your liver in a state but if I want to function in work then this is the only thing that numbs the pain.
Makes me laugh when people say its just a headache whats up with ya ?
Also I have not drank alcohol for two years now because of the severe migrains this would be after only one or two drinks it starts.
Does any body else have this?
Peace and love to all :)

That's the problem with pain relief, the effective stuff tends to turn me in to a vegetable so I have to weigh up which is the lesser of two evils!
I don't get the alchohol migraines with all drinks, but red wine, port, brandy, rum and wiskey seem to trigger migraines for me.

seems like quite a few ppl dont have much success with head ache tablets, even cocodamol.
has anyone had more success when taking head ache medication when they first feel the firt signs of the migraine coming on?
i have found if i take something when i first feel some tension in the base of my neck (rear), it seems to work. but if i leave it longer when the migraine is in full flow the medication doesnt work so good or not at all.
also is interesting that some ppl's migraine last for days, mine nearly always go over night after a good sleep.
very interesting reading all the posts.
I carry at least one pill called Maxalt Melt 10mg, just put it on your tongue when it starts, it is not a painkiller in the common sense, it either narrows or widens the arteries in the brain, not sure but it does work.
Red wine was the worst, then chocolate, but the last time when I had it bad for weeks, all I could smell were "milk products" like milk, yogurt, cheese, they smelled like a whole cow.

Yeah I am all about herbs and natural healing, but when a migraine comes around, no amount of cayenne, valerian root, willows bark, etc. will do jack squat to relieve the pain. Unfortunately I was very drugged as a child, always on antibiotics, pain relievers, etc. So I have tried to get away from that and take the smallest dose possible for migraines now. Like when I feel it coming, I will take one ibuprofen (I know, pretty wimpy) and then usually have to take two more over the next few hours to keep the pain to a minimum. If I miss this window of time at the onset of the migraine, it will be so bad that I will not be able to stand up for 24-48 hours, and the whole time I lay down I feel about to throw up any second. If I catch the migraine with pain relievers early, I can usually coast out the day as long as there are no bright lights on and I don't have to do much besides sit and rest.
I did link drinking alchohol to headaches the next day, and I mean one or two drinks, even just wine, nothing exciting. So I stopped doing that but I don't think those were migraines, they seemed "just" headaches. As much as I HATE to admit it, I also get headaches the next day if I have ice cream the night before :(. So I stopped doing that too. Still get a two-day migraine most months.
Just to add something else to the mix...I tend to (involuntarily) have OBEs within 48 hours of the start of the migraine, as long as the pain is not too severe. This happened to me yesterday a few hours after I reported on this thread that I had a migraine. I was laying down in my bed drifting off to sleep then became conscious that my whole body was buzzing and I was lifting up out of my body. I was wearing neodymium magnet rings and I don't know how this affected the experience but I seemed to have a difficult time fully popping out (I stayed just above my body for what seemed like an hour). So now I'm trying to figure out how all these things work together, since I noticed that I astral project 2 days a month according to my hormone schedule, but those are also the same days I usually have my migraine for the month. Yesterday was not within this time frame so now I am baffled and wondering if something to do with the migraine or pain killer is what brings on the OBEs. More confusion :D.
Just want to say I am very sorry to everyone here who suffers migraines. I have heard many guesses for how to prevent them like drinking a lot of water and getting enough sleep, but unfortunately they still happen every month for me right on schedule, with a few spontaneous ones thrown in at other times. If all you had to do to prevent or kill a migraine was drink some water surely I would have stopped having them by now.

i sleep really good, so that cant be part of it for me. i always go to sleep on my back, flat, with my head bewtween 2 pillows because i believe that the position you go to sleep in can be kept for 5-6 hours or more, so if you are not comfortable you will wake up prematurely; not getting enough deep sleep. since i have been doing this (years) i have slept the best ever in my life, no shoulder pains etc. from lying on my side for too long.

Like you biblegirl, I really feel it for everyone who has posted on here who suffers from migraine. I've never experienced an OBE or anything like that but on one occasion I lost the use of the right side of my body and fell down the stairs (thankfully I was near the bottom anyway so didn't get injured). My flatmates called for the doctor who said that this can happen with cluster migraines. Sensation came back over the next 24 hours but it was very very scary.
On a positive note, I have noticed that mine aren't as severe as I've got older, either that or I'm maybe becoming acclimatised more.
I remember as a child the only way I could take the pain away was by creating another distracting pain, so I would bang my head against the wall really hard. It is horrible horrible memories.
I also find alcohol can be a trigger, particularly red wine, port and whiskey. Caffeine also is bad for me too, as is cheese and chocolate.

OBE = out of body experience. simply put, people having some sort of conscious experience of themselves at a distance from their physical body.

I sympathise with other migraine sufferers too, there's a lot more to it than just having a bad headache!
I don't get OBE's, but sometimes I have felt really out of it, almost as if I had been spiked with something, although this has definitely not been the case.
I never got migraines until I was in my mid 20's and they seem to be cyclic. I have had quite a few this year, the last time I got so many was about 3 years ago. They also tend to be worse during the Summer.
I have to take the strongest painkillers I can and lie on my back in a dark, quiet room.
