Has anybody made their own Iodine Solution (Lugol's Iodine) using Potassium Iodide and Iodine Crystals.
If yes what do you think of it?

Hi Dalem.

Have you got the instructions on how to make it up?

Would you be willing to let us cash strapped have the formula? I've been searching for months now.

I've taken to iodine painting. Even plain old tincture of iodine is hard to come by now days.

The local Pharmacist said that they don't really keep it on as many people are allergic to it. Allergic?

Don't remember the nurses ever asking me if I was allergic to iodine before they liberally smeared it on before they operated.

Hi weeme.
Here are a couple of video tutorials from ANTHONY PANTALLERESCO. I have purchased all the ingredients from eBay quite cheeply.
Basically it's a mixture of Potassium Iodide and Iodine Crystals mixed in Distilled water.
The videos explain all.

Making Lugol's Iodine (Part 2 of 2) - YouTube

There is a brilliant video by Dr David Bernstein called " Iodine - The Most Misunderstood Nutrient. "
Try to google it, it explains how most of the world are Iodine deficient and replacing this nutrient can have amazing results on our bodies.

I downloaded it from a torrent. Easy to find.

Thanks Dalem you are a star.

I was unsure of how much iodine to use for the painting and Lugols is just too expensive for my pocket.

I will watch the linked videos tomorrow evening as my download speeds are too slow.

When you think of the price of Lugol's compared to the price of raw materials. I got mine, I spent about $100 (£60) including shipping from US, it's enough to make about two litres. Got everything from eBay.
Should last me and the wife ages. :)

I've seen some potassium iodide on ebay from the USA which is known as ACS grade, and then some from the UK which is GPC.

Anyone know what those letters stand for please ?

I am in the UK by the way.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but i'm sure ACS is Analytical grade.
GPC is usually General Purpose Grade.
There is also a Pharmaceutical grade. (BP in the UK)
You don't need the more expensive ACS or BP grades as GPC is perfect for Iodine Solutions.

In the UK:

Potassium Iodide AR (UK Anylitical grade.)

KI M.W. 166.01
Assay 99.5% Minimum
pH (5% Solution) 6.0 — 9.5

Maximum Limits of Impurities:
Iodate 2ppm
Sulphate 0.0025%
Alkalinity (KOH) 0.02%
Moisture 0.5%
Iodine Reducing Substances 0.001%
Insoluble Matter 0.003%

I don't have data sheets yet for the other two.

Thanks for that info.

Just making sure I don't buy anything that's potentially 'detrimental' to health.

I will buy the stuff today, and hopefully will be making my own iodine next week sometime using my distiller for the water, and some dark brown 100ml dropper bottles.

I am part way through making my own distiller from a pressure cooker, copper coils and a large container to catch it in.
What type of distiller do you have?

I have done a lot of research lately into the use of Bromine and Iodine in the US, mostly around California and the results are horrifying.

Bromine is used as a fumigant for agriculture. It is sprayed on fruit and vegetables. Plants sprayed with Bromine have high levels of it in their structure.
In 1981 6.3 million pounds of Bromine was sprayed on crops in California.
In 1991 18.7 million pounds of Bromide was sprayed on crops in California.
I don't have figures between 1991 and 2010.

The citizens of the US eat a lot of fruit and veg that originate from southern California which is irrigated by the lower colorado river that is contaminated with Bromine and also Perchlorate.

Being one of the Halogens Bromine will make Iodine deficient people worse. Bromine will kick out Iodine from your bodies. Remember that most of the world population are Iodine deficient and consuming Bromine will exacerbate the problem.
Bromine is highly toxic with no use for the body whatsoever.
It cannot be emphasised enough how important it is to ensure your Iodine levels are kept at a good level.
The RDA for Iodine is around 150mcg but this figure is thought to be ridculously low it should be around between 10 to 50mg for a healthy person and more for someone with a severe illness.
The higher doses are needed to expel the Bromine and other Halogens from your body.
