Why are the most ridiculous newspapers the most widely read?

You could say the elections are rigged.

But what about TV shows? Why do the most absurd and tasteless shows, like Celebrity Big Brother the highest rating? Nobody forces people to watch those shows. There are alternatives.

Good questions... I think it's all Illusions - we see what we want to see.

Ok High school where were the Ugly girls at? There is someone for
everyone - but maybe we focus on the popular person in school we
missed out on the interesting quite ones- if you got to know them
weren't so shallow?

Shows like Big Brother - I think they appeal to people's voyeuristic side?
Maybe they are waiting for something better to happen?

Not that popularity in itself is important.

I just find it remarkable that some, such as David Icke, have to through a 15 year struggle to get their ideas in the footlight, while others have overnight success.

Programming, yes, of course. We are programmed to not question things, to not think for ourselves, to be dependent etc.

Interesting questions...Edward L Bernays used to talk about how stupid society is...I think the reason for this is because to make more money you need to target as many people as possible, people may be diverse in the higher facilities but in their flaws, a lot of people suffer the same inadequacies. So the key to advertising is to appeal to the most common strands throughout society. In other words, mediocrity means mass appeal.

If you were to make a very diverse show, then you could make it the best ever but only a select few would get it. It’ll probably be remembered and be before it’s time but being before your time doesn’t mean you’ll get instantly rewards like being after your time does.

I don't think people are stupid but society as a whole is very very stupid.
