There's not much talk about cryptid encounters in Finland and scandinavia, not much talk, but this country is not without it's legends, stories and encounters with uneplaineble and weird creatures.

The old legends are surprisingly similar to those native Americans have, giants, trolls, shape shifting animal people etc.

There's an ages old tradition of story telling here, by singing. Christianity has almost totally killed that tradition but there's huge bunch of old singable poems from the ages past, i'm quite familiar with these cos of our band, we use those old poems as base for our lyrics.

Most usual creature legends are about huge trolls(Much like scandinavian ones.), sometimes they possess abilities to transform themselves into a bear, wolf or elk. There's also stories of other kind of giants, somewhat human, but made of stone or wood sometimes. Besides of trolls, there's lot of legends and beliefs about elves. They look like and act like Irish elves and gnomes. There's still lot of people who kind of believe to those creatures and some even claim to have seen them. People here used to believe all forests, buildings and places have their own guardian elf who must be respected and treated nicely or really shitty things could happen.

Just for example, there's many stories how somebody managed to piss of an Sauna elf and next night/day the Sauna mysteriously burned... At christmas time it was usual thing to bring food and stuff for elves, so they could have good time too and to make sure they don't get pissed off.

I have never seen one myself, but i do remember my grandparents tell me stories about people who have. In here most people tend to keep their lips sealed, when it comes to this kind of things, so it's not wonder there's not many eyewitness accounts around.

Then there's this thing called Hisi. (Hiisi on finnish, for some reason English speaking people use that with one I.) Hisi is interesting thing, the oldest and most usual meaning of the word is a 'holy place' or burial ground. Or a sacrificial site or place used to pray for gods/spirits or do some other ceremonies. Hisi is used as a name of vaiety of creatures too. Some elves were called with that name and many creatures. Sometimes it was used of guardian spirits, like Vesihiisi, =water guardian, sometimes about forest spirits etc. AND it was used as a name for amost any kind of paranormal strange creature.

Many of these legends are from Lapish people, maybe because they still live like they have ived for millenia and they still have this storytelling tradition. Lapish shamans are said to be sometimes able to shapeshift and appear to people in form of wolves, bears, or moose, fox etc. There's also stories of demonic creatures who could do the same.

This is almost exaclty like believes and stories native americans have in their tradition. For example deerman/woman is not unheard of in north here.

This is a hard topic to discuss because not many people here talk much about strange creatures. Everybody knows these legends of shapeshifting shamans and mythical trolls and Hisi and stuff but few a guts to tell anybody if they have seen one. Finnish people are quite indoctrinated to keep their mouths shut.

So, only stories about cryptids i know for sure to be more than stories are my own and my friends experoences.

Some years back at autumn(I can't remember exact date.) i was driving around our town just to kill some time.. I stopped for a smoke near huge trainstation/rail yard near a paperfactory. The place was small road, other side railroads/old rotting houses, which havent been in use for years, and other side was this meadow growing high weeds and some bushes and stuff. It was really dark there, no any lights near, it was overcast and usual pitchblack Finnish autumn night.

I stopped the car and smoked my cigarette and suddenly heard this scream/voice of something. I'm not sure where it came from, i only have the drivers window open, but it was near. I think less than 30 meters away. This scream/growl really freaked me out, it was nothing i've ever heard before it. It was a strange long scream/growl that was like woman screaming, cat being painfully killed and a big dog growling at the same time. It lasted for approx 10 seconds before getting silent. As you all guessed i didn't stay to check what it was. I drove away as fast as i could.

Later i talked about this with my good friend and interestingly he had a similar experience, which besides of that scream involved some big animal, he said he got a feeling it was some sort of big cat. He was at their portch havong a smoke and heard this thing scream right outside the portch, he went then to check what made the noice, he heard something big walk just few meters away at the yard, but he didn't see a thing. He told me he stared right where the noice came from but this thing was totally invisible. Next day he checked for tracks and found big animal paw tracks, he didn't know what animal made them, they were BIG and definately not human. Moslty reminded him of wolf/big cat tracks.

Anyway this creature first screamed/growled, then walked past the portch and vanished...

He has also seen a big black cat once, he told me ot looked like a panther, but bigger an was partially invisible. It just popped out of nowhere in the middle of a small meadow, walked to a small patch of trees/bushes and then vanished. I know the place and there's no way animal that big could just pop out to the meadow and vanish wihtout a trace. Not in that spot. And he said it was transparent. Didn't make any voices that time.

His encounteres with these things both happened in an area which is kind of paranormal hotspot in out town. I've witnessed a UFO there, so have many other people and some kind of hauntings. Voices of children in forests at strange times of day coming and going without a trace. Many people have heard them, went to look for the kids making noices and never found anybody.

This is a strange town, i've witnessed many ufo's here, and there's unusual many haunted locations/houses here. + few places where occult/satanic rituals have taken plac and few 'holy places,' Energyhigh areas, both positive and negative.

But those animal things? Big invisible cats sneaking at backyards here? I'd like to know more about that. :)

Are there still native shaman in Finland that are said to practice shapeshifting, like the skinwalker tradition in North America?

It sounds like the country has as much apparent paranormal activity as anywhere else but the mindset not to speak about it keeps these things off the rest of the world's radar. Why do you think the culture tends to suppress this sort of talk? Is it materialism and the desire to look like a modern, progressive country free of superstition to the rest of the world, or something else?

Those semi-invisible panthers popping in an out of reality are interesting in that sightings of anomalous big cats like that in different parts of the world might have an interdimensional explanation.

We hear about people seeing Bigfoot, or Dogmen or chupacabras etc. in North America, but rarely are sightings of creatures like trolls or elves reported or taken seriously over there. Are there any well-known modern troll or elf sightings in Finland that you know of?

There might be few, although i think it's rare these days. Most Saami people who live like they have lived for ages consentrate around 'normal' tradiotional stuff and shamanism is quite forgotten. There's lot of stories and legends still around anyway.

I think it's modern way of life... FInland is really 'american' country what comes to common people.. I think one reason to this silence os christianity too.. Many old people hwo know these stories count paranormal encounters as work of the devil etc. and keep their mouths sealed. And it's Finnish mindset, people tend not to talk about strange things and just mind their own business. It's sort of trubborness and maybe fear. People are sop concerned what others think.

Multidimensional they must be as far as i know. I doubt there's many teleporing animals around other than multidimensional creatures.

I think nevest story of elf sighting is maybe hundred years old... At least what i've heard. I don't remember any well known sightings at the moment. Must search the net later today for some known stories..

There's one place quite near where i live, it's in Parikkala, there's this small lake in middle of nowhere, it's name comes from story about troll sighting... Story tells that the troll lives in the lake there..(This is quite usual about trolls, it is said most of them live in lakes or under hills etc.) Interesting thing is that the troll have been seen just wandering in the forests near by and entering the lake or leaving it. This suggests that trolls here are able to breathe under water too.

The place and story is interesting, my father told me he knows two people who claim to have seen the troll. It's said to be maybe 3 to 4 meters tall, looks like a big human with long beard and it's hair is almost like treebranches and stuff. Some say it has somesort of horns.

The lake and near by rather large hill are named after the troll.. Those places are the most common to see it. I don't remember when was the last time someone claimed to see this thing. Oh, the trolls name is Pörö. Poeroe in English i think...

The place and stories about troll there are quite well known in south Karelia.. Heh, i've stayed few nights in that place, i even swam in the trolls lake too. :D I think i'm going there for some camping this summer. Must remember to take camera with me just in case.

I can ask my dad about the exact location of this place and send some link and maybe pics of the place here..

Great info hammarberg.

Finland and most other Scandinavian countries are places we hear and see virtually nothing of here in Australia even concerning mainstream things, so I'm enjoying the perspective you're providing on the country's paranormal background.

Any links, images, translations or accounts you have in the future would be greatly appreciated by myself and many others too, I'm sure.

@ hammarberg,

don't mean to pee in your parade, but that high pitch scream could be vixen.
Have heard them in built up urban areas.

Other than that, good post.

One more thing about being tight lipped; there is the old tongue twister:

"Vesihiisi hisisi hississa".

I don't think so, we have lot of these things around here and i've never heard a fox making that kind of noise... That what i heard was really something different. It's really hard to describe, i wish i'll find something similar to show you guys...

Damn, i'll try to find out some camparable from the net as soon as i find time for it. And for some links/pics/stories too..

So SOL, be patient. I think i'll manage to get time for this stuff at weekend. ;)

And it's same thing other way around.. I know almost nothing about Australia in general, not to mention paranormal stuff. (Except some ufo sightings/secret base stuff...)

Thats good to hear. :) And there's more to come... I'm not sure how much information i will be able to find from the internet. My knowledge of these topics are purely stories i've heard from people and my own experience.

By the way, my friend i told about earlier. Besides of those experiences of his i earlier told about, theres one more.

He has also seen a headless cat once. He was camping near his home with one of his friends(This happenend at late '80s.) and they heard scratching noise and something moving outside their tent. He told me they listened the sounds for an hour or so and then they went to check it out. And thy saw a cat without a head, just few meters outside of their tent.. It just walked there, and then disappeared to near by bush.. He told me this cat was just like a normal house cat, black or dark grey, otherwise normal looking, but it had no head. He and his friend saw it clearly and watched it for maybe minute or two. I know this sounds freaky, but i trust this guy and he was very serious about this. And he has never lied to me. (I've found out this from other sources, this guy is honest...)

Anyway, it's iteresting, all his experiences inwolwing dtrange cats, materializing from thin air, then disappearing etc. have been taken place in same area. It's approx. square mile area in which all these things have happened. Plus many ufo sightings and few haunted places.

I think stories about elves are the most common in southern Finland and the troll stuff... Shaman stories including shapeshifting and other strange things are from Saami people.

It is interesting how similar the elves/gnomes are here compared to Irish legends and sightings. They look and act the same and play tricks on people and get easily pissed off if treated badly. And other way around, legends tell that if one is really nice to an elf, the elf makes really nice things happen too...

Ok, yea, enough about the elves now. I have an document to watch. I'll get something more to read here asap. :)

There are stories about mischievious faerie folk called 'Urisks' here and the farmers who live in that area used to leave food and milk out for them, in parts of Scotland and Ireland there are faerie trees and faerie rings and the farmers will not interfere with these, if they have them on their land. There are also rumours of a large sasqwatch called 'Fearly Mor' in English (Am Fearliath Mor in Gaelic) which attacks hikers on Ben McDhui, it is reported that it sometimes wears a top hat and is hairy and between ten and twenty foot tall......this type of sasqwatch creature has also been seen on the island of Skye in the cullin mountains, they seem to be very fierce (might be a brocken spectre but that does'nt explain the sounds or the large footprints). Hav'nt heard any stories of troll like creatures here though......

Great story, love to hear about things like this, especially as I am moving out to Suomi next year.

Will be in Oulu in 4 weeks time.

I have to say, there is a load of mythology there, it just seems to have been forgotten, I have a copy of the Kalevala, much to the amusement of my Girlfriend (She is Finnish, the reason I am moving there).

Hey Manx.

Nice to hear you are moving up north. :) Its a magical country. I hope to meet you one day then. Not many peeps here drop by or move to Finland.

One more strange story from Finnish mythology, its bit hard to translate or describe. Its called "metsänpeitto". It means "to be covered by forest". Its sort of a spell, under which person or animal can get by its own, or by doing bad things or by a curse. When one gets under it, even the most familiar of places changes into a wast forest, never before seen by the experiencer. The person or animal under the spell will not see or hear any other people, familiar place or anything, houses, roads, objects, everything turn into stones, trees, grass, roots etc. Its like getting lost in your own backyard.

Ive experienced this kind of thing twice i think, it was about getting lost in familiar places, last time was month ago at my summer house. I think i just got lost in the woods, but the story about "metsän peitto" came to my mind in an heart beat. Scary stuff. :D

Add that with few goblins and youre all set for a Finnish ancient horror evening lost in your own backyard.
