several years ago, before the kids were born,me and the wife went on a day trip to MALHAM, a village in north yorkshire.we started to walk slowly away from the village, the cars and people slowly got less n less......after a while we couldnt see anyone...so we stopped and realised...that it was ABSOLUTELY SILENT...not a bird singing,no breeze at all,no cars, no people......i thought id gone deaf....the silence was beautiful,it was quite scary really.i felt detached from everything,it really was a strange feeling...total silence.....wish i could re-create that same feeling.....

I agree with you there, silence is a rare commodity these day's.
I spent five years living alone in the rainforest, with just my horse and dogs, it would become so silent at night it seemed like a vacuum, your ears straining just to pick up any sound, just the occasional bellowing of a cow or one of the dogs barking.. I loved it!:D

Jim, I live in Costa Rica and I have stayed many many many... times in the rainforest and there is never silence. In fact its nosier at night. Sun goes down and a party breaks loose! What between the swooshing of bats, the constant chitter of bugs, nameless creatures jumping in and out of trees and rustling leaves. My god its a riot! So what rainforest are you referring to? Im really asking from curiosity. Maybe its a northern type and more woodsy then from a tropical place? If so then you would know more on that then me. By the way speaking of Costa Rica, if anyone wants to see UFO's no better place. Every single person I know here, including myself, has seen them. More often then not in broad daylight and televised. Check it out. Trippy. I have some theories on it. One includes the enegy from our numerous volcanoes, particulary the infamous Arenal. Anyway Cheers to all of you!

It's sub tropical rainforest on the east coast of Australia, it can get a bit noisy at night right in the forest but nothing like the tropical rainforest your talking about in Costa Rica. My house was also in a clearing, lot's of grazing cattle about.
I'll post a picture later to show you if I can dig one up.

Looks like a really beautiful spot Jimi!
We have recently purchased a rural property in the hinterland - 130 acres with an organic orchard with lots of natural rain forest still on the property. Amazing views, Kangaroos, koalas, wild parrots etc, etc. I can hardly wait to get our house built and move out there. I'm well and truly living in the heart of a 'tourist mecca' and having to share EVERYTHING with EVERYBODY. I love, solitiude, nature, peace and quiet :p

Silence is very rare these days. You can always hear traffic where I live. The last time I heard proper silence was when we were on Exmoor in Devon. Absolute silence, all you could hear were the Exmoor ponies munching grass. Bliss!

Wow. Jim thank you for putting up those photographs. Absolutely lovely. I see how that place would be much more quiet compared to the forests here. The cattle grazing land around must really keep it quiet. Here the forests are rather dense, though amazing in beauty and always have to keep an eye out for curious alien-like bugs. They grow here quite big. LOL Im used to it but still enjoy seeing them from the view of strangers. Nice horse you have there too! lol the most exotic creature I keep around is a funny old pug. I enjoy the fact that even though I live near the city in a populated place there are lizards of all sizes that come and go. Nothing keeps them out in a place like this. Even the fanciest of homes has such around. Yes I like reptiles. Well only the ones who dont fuck with one and actually perform a service.
