A boat made of 12,000 plastic bottles has set sail on a voyage from San Francisco to Sydney to spread awareness about pollution in the world's oceans.
Environmentalist and banking heir David De Rothschild and a crew set out on the appropriately named Plastiki catamaran.
Their 11,000-nautical mile journey will go past the Great Pacific Garbage Patch - a sea of waste about five times the size of the UK or twice that of Texas.
Four out of five plastic bottles end up in a landfill, according to the UN.
"It is time we beat waste and this is an out-of-sight, out-of-mind issue that needs to be addressed," Mr De Rothschild told the BBC earlier this month.
The 31-year-old adventurer, who has completed expeditions to both poles and various jungles, was already tweeting on Saturday, hours after the boat set sail on its three-month voyage.
"Travelling 2.0 Knots ummm! That's a lot of ocean ahead!" he said on his Twitter page. "Just saw our first bit marine debris - a plastic cup!"
Green credentials
The Plastiki takes recycling to a whole other level.
The 12,000 used water bottles are filled with carbon dioxide to make the vessel durable and buoyant.
The catamaran is powered by solar, wind and sea turbines.
An exercise bike will power the boat's laptops and there is also a composting bathroom and gardens to grow food.
Critics say the expedition only perpetuates the belief that it is acceptable to use plastic as long as people recycle it, rather than encouraging people to cut down on its use entirely.
They also point out that if the Plastiki were to break apart mid-journey, it would dump thousands of bottles directly into the ocean.

they are a powerful family but people have the responsibility to make their own decisions and to treat the earth with respect.

no im saying his family helped build the fossil fuel addicted world we are now by suppressing real technology (tessla) to get us on a grid that they can charge us everything for, they are the reason we are still building an obsolete society i mean look around plastic is gotta be the most used material in society and its pure poison, i understand we can cut down on personal use doesn't mean they will its in almost everything we live around

Economic globalization, which the Rockefellers, Rothschilds push, is the main cause of the plasitc pollution in the oceans.
That being China (Indian etc) produce slave-made tat that doesn't last and, ergo, is dumped. Like Nike shoes that last a few months etc.

i was referring to his real passion which was a building a grid less power system harnessing the power from torsion field physics(haarp) and supplying everyone with free energy he was heavly criticized for this and lost all his money and respect, most of his patents were stolen and they turned his tech into a weapons or harmful tools, imagine if he would have gotten his way and we would have used free energy in the 40's we would be living in a completly different world with no need for fossil fuels

We use A/C --Another Tessla Invention--inside of those grids...If you give humans anything free they will waste it--meaning most people would'nt turn off the lights or TV at night.
On top of that,we live in a society where we pay for our fair share.Please tell how do you monitor such a wasteful idea?
One more point,they are trying to to use cell phone tower to charge cell phones. So, wireless electric energy is still possible.

Tessla was way ahead of his time and most of his criticism was not on science it was on his behavior.
He lost most of his money for many reasons like:
-he really didn't care about money
-he kept re-investing into tech that was too far advanced for his time
-At first he didn't know When you invent something working for a company you will never own the patten
-he had no family
Radio transmission over the Atlantic was the only stolen patent and he did get credit for that after he died.
So, you think patents last forever...they don't...thank goodness because all of our tech would of die with tessla.

That reminds me of something I saw on Ripley's Believe it or Not show one time. Some guy had built an Island using those plastic bottles. He had a home, trees, a garden, and everything he could want, and it was ok with the government where he was at. I thought that was such a fab idea.

Altogether, I think it's a very positive initiative. It may inspire people to get more self-sufficient. David the Rothschild may be a vehicle for the reptilians, but he is also a vehicle for God, so even he can do good. It may of course be speculated whether or not he has a hidden sinister purpose, but remember that every action taken on evil intent always brings something good about it too, otherwise it would not be allowed. To grow, to become better and more good is a general principle of the universe which cannot be overridden even by the most sinister of acts.
