Myself and Mrs lackingsleep visited the WTC in 1999. I'm pretty new to this forum and have been reading this sub-forum in the past few days and it reminded me of when we went. A couple of things stand out from the visit:

1) There was a separate entrance for visitors. Everybody was security checked pretty much like an airport. Everybody was stamped on the hand. I remember one older chap in particular objected to the stamp. He said he did not want to ever be branded again then rolled up his sleeve and showed a tattoo on his forearm, a concentration camp number. He became quite aggressive - we felt sorry for him.

2) From the observation deck I remember seeing the planes flying up and down the Hudson and thinking how easy little it would take (a matter of seconds) it would take to fly into a tall building on Manhattan if one was to lose control or bearings (say in fog or something). I remember looking across at the over tower, you could see into a lot of windows and could see people working, eating in restaurants etc... and thinking how f**ked everybody would be in a major disaster in the buildings.

Adds nothing to the debate I know but I don't remember it as being the most comfortable of visits. not the most comfortable of places.

Hey welcome. I live here in NYC and you experienced a piece of what this city is like. Alot of people who post here about 9/11 have never been to NYC let alone the financial district/lower manhattan area. Certain things (prior to 9/11) stick out in you mind about how this city felt. It is still like that for sure but when you visit or live here you gain a perspective that many people don't understand and it is a bit difficult to explain. Many people post things which I see from a perspective most people can't. That doesn't mean those opinions are wrong or right but are said without the knowledge of what the city streets are like.
