"The images are undeniably shocking"
Undeniably shocking? Isnt that just the bounty of mother earth?

I think Billy it says more about the desperation of the people not the act itself food is food after all. I didn't find the animal being butchered disturbing more the starving people around it.

So all the elephants are eaten, post Mugabe , tourists won't come to Zimbabwe to look at elephants, pay for hotel rooms, support the local economy. Rather like a bookshop burning their stock during the winter to keep warm and wonder why no one comes in during the summer.

Henry Kissinger brought white rule to an end in Rhodesia to install the Jesuit-trained Marxist Mugabe as dictator for life, with Lord Carrington's blessing, (Lancaster Agreement) to bring Zimbabwe to it's knees and empty the 'Bread Basket of Africa, so that now they have to depend on carrion for food. Clearly their objective has been accomplished and is a resounding success.

Cows absolutely have emotions.
Separating calves from their mothers and then branding them was an experience that hardened me up for a reason.
Well there you go why not?? Why do we bestow different attitudes to different animals? Why is it ok to kill a cow and not a dog?
More than likely to do with most people know someone or have a dog them self's , so i guess you kinda grow a special place for them, where as other animals you dont see as much so this dosn't happen.
I must say tho I would have to be on deaths door from starvation before i thought about eating a dog .

As long as the animal was not killed and died naturally and was not alive when the butchering took place I see no problem with what they did. It's simply natural.

Maybe, but if you don't have that empathy..
And say, you're a hunter, truck driver or gameskeeper you might apply that logic to humans and end up killing prostitutes, hitchhikers etc...etc....

Well there you go why not?? Why do we bestow different attitudes to different animals? Why is it ok to kill a cow and not a dog?
Humans are animals to ;)
The imperative is such that we eat those least like ourselves depending on the situation. If it comes down so bad people become cannibals, if we are stupid enough to let that kind of situation happen then we're nothing more than animals who eat each other.
When all the animals have gone, all the edible plants too, and the only meal is walking around on two legs is it more acceptable to eat the humans that one can least identify with? ;)

Please can somebody tell me that the elephant was actually dead because I was on the daily mail website a few days ago and I happened to come across it and I saw the photo for the article and quickly went off the site. It sickened me and I got so angry and upset because the photo I saw looked like the elephant was alive. I've been traumatised about it for days trying to get the image out of my head. I only came on this thread just now because I wanted to know what other people's opinions on it were. I am so hoping that it was dead to start with.

From the article :
For us it is a saddening sight - a magnificent bull elephant struck down in his old age.
But for the starving of Zimbabwe, it was little short of a miracle.
The carcass provided a vital source of food, and hundreds of desperate villagers in the Gonarezhou National Park descended on the dead animal within minutes of its discovery.
Yes, it was already dead.
'Struck down in his old age' = died of old age.
In my opinion this dailymail article has deliberately blurred the lines between eating a naturally dead animal and making it seem like the Africans murdered it...

Don't worry it was already dead, I doubt villagers would be desperate enough to try and take on a bull elephant for food, there are easier and less dangerous things to kill for food than that.

Even if they were, I don't think it's any of our business...
there's a catch 22 going on with the game reserves in that technically they are set up to keep the animals from being whiped out... but on the other hand, the population for wild animals is bottlenecked so that responsible hunting for food can't go on...
We came close to whiping out massive animals for food in the past already...
http://www.dkimages.com/discover/previews/740/92937.JPG
And as sad as that was... the glory of taking down an animal that big and being able to feed a tribe for months can't be overstated.

Very true, I'm with the people who are thinking poor starving people rather than poor dead elephant. I just hope it did die of natural causes and wasn't sick or anything, the last thing those people need is to have eaten contaminated meat :(

Must... not... get angry.
I have really low tolerance for double standards.
Fat white westerners wouldn't hesitate to start murdering protected animals for food if they got a little hungry. They'd be eating their dogs by the time they lost 5 lbs.
And these people didn't even kill the animal.

Yes, I would have felt sorry for them but when I saw the headline "Hungry Zimbabweans Strip Elephants Skin" with a photo that looked like it was still alive I thought "those fucking bastards!" and I had another reason to hate humanity.
I am so glad that it was already dead but if they had to kill the animal first, I wouldn't have been happy about it but I would have been very understanding considering their lifestyle and the fact that they were desperate.

first of all, the headline is misleading to say the least, it i desighned to shock
yes it does demonise hunting even though as you say nothing has been hunted

As far as I'm aware this has been the norm for some years according to a CITES agreement with the national parks in Zimbabwe.
A trophy hunter comes in shoots a Elephant/Kudu/Eland/Hippo for his tusks-horns. The villagers come to clean up, simples

QFT.
I really dont see how this is newsworthy. Dead Animal. People Eat It. Big Deal.
The bigger picture here is surely the contrast in the way of life there, compared to here in the west and just how big of a contrast it is.
Reminds me of the Film LORD OF WAR where a plane lands in Sierra Leone (could be wrong) and within 24 hours there is nothing left of the plane!

Food is almost guaranteed in this country, the problem comes from not being able or having the guts to get it ourselves any more.
People pay a mint to eat common garden snails in france!!!
And many people here are disgusted that I get my meat from a farm! instead of in packaging from tesco.
As the lad on the corner once said to me when I offered him frre range eggs...
I dont get my eggs from chickens, I get my eggs from Asda!
