A massive global concert aimed at raising awareness of climate change was announced on Thursday.
The Live Earth concert will take place on July 7 2007, taking in all seven continents in a 24-hour spectacular featuring more than 100 of the world’s top musicians.
The concert is part of Save Our Selves (SOS) a campaign which aims to trigger a mass movement to combat the global climate crisis. SOS hopes to reach people in every corner of the planet through television, film, radio, the internet and through the Live Earth concert.

An audience of 2 billion
Promoters hope the concerts will engage an audience of more than 2 billion people through a combination of concert attendance and the massive global reach of MSN. That audience, and the proceeds from the concerts, will create the foundation for a new, multi-year global effort to combat the climate crisis led by The Alliance for Climate Protection and its Chair, Al Gore.
The SOS campaign was launched on Thursday by Kevin Wall, Al Gore, Cameron Diaz and the MSN Network. SOS founder Kevin Wall, who won an Emmy as Worldwide Executive Producer of Live 8, said "our climate crisis is the biggest challenge facing humanity. SOS is more than a global distress call. SOS will give the world the tools we need to answer that call with meaningful action."
SOS has a powerful advocate and campaigner in former Vice-President Al Gore who also had a message for the assembled journalists. "In order to solve the climate crisis, we have to reach billions of people," Gore said. "We hope to jumpstart that movement right here, right now, and take it to a new level on July 7, 2007."
The concerts will take place in Sydney, Australia; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Shanghai, China; London, England; Kyoto, Japan; Johannesburg, South Africa; and a US city that has yet to be determined, Wall said. Gore added that the campaign also plans to stage the first-ever rock concert on Antarctica.
Some of the performers who have already signed up for the concerts include: Pharrell, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Snoop Dogg, Lenny Kravitz, Bon Jovi, Paolo Nutini, Sheryl Crow, AFI, Melissa Etheridge, John Mayer, Damien Rice, Corrine Bailey Rae, Duran Duran, Snow Patrol, John Legend, Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Enrique Iglesias, Fall Out Boy, Mana, Keane, Kelly Clarkson, Korn, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Ray LaMontagne, Robin Thicke, and Kenna.
The campaign’s identity is based on SOS, the international Morse code distress signal: three dots, followed by three dashes, followed by three dots. SOS intend to use that signal as a continuous distress call to prompt individuals, corporations and governments around the world to respond to the climate crisis with action.
The SOS campaign will announce television, film, and other initiatives to engage people about the climate crisis in the coming months. The Live Earth concerts will be broadcast worldwide on MSN.
Live Earth will implement a new Green Event Standard that SOS hopes will be the model for carbon neutral concerts and other live events in the future. The Green Event Standard is being developed in partnership with the US Green Building Commission to create a way for venues to be LEED-approved.
