In Plato's Republic we are presented with an allegory of the human condition. Human beings live underground in a cave. They have lived in the cave since childhood, chained at the legs and necks. They know no other existence. In the cave a fire blazes. Between the fire and the prisoners there is a raised way with a low wall. Free men pass through behind the low wall but the chained prisoners do not see them directly, only as shadows cast by firelight. The prisoners mistake these reflections for reality. We are loathe to admit that we might be the prisoners in the cave. Our lives are not spent chained in the darkness and confusion. Our lives are filled with busy activity and full schedules and we are too busy to be confused! It is difficult to think of the waking life as the sleeping life from which we must awaken in order that we may live. Stop, look around at the people you know and the people you see. Is it possible that you walk with sleepwalkers? Do you sleep or wake? Is it possible that we all live like sleepwalkers in a dream. Though common sense may reel at the idea, spiritual tradition universally proclaims it. The Hasidic teacher, Rabbi Nachman, said, 'People may be asleep all their lives. But through tales told by a true holy one, they can be awakened.'

So the "freemen" are the ones helping to deceive those who are still in chains ..... ?   :(

Take it how you wish but that is not how I see it. The free men are free and living freely, those that are lost (sheeple) don't even really understand that their is another freedom as they think they're already free!

Erm, there's no other way to take it. In the analogy, the freemen are standing behind those in chains, creating false shadows on the wall, and deceiving the others. And really, what other existence do the freeman have, except to march back and forth all day, deceiving those in chains? This would have me believing that even the "freemen" are imprisoned and deceived. They might even be worse off, because they're the ones who already think they're free :)

Not how I see it, therefore there IS another way. Free men aren't deceiving anyone. In this example they live on a higher (more enlightened) plain of existence, probably unaware of the prisoners. IMO

EDIT: google image the words Plato's Republic and Cave. this might help you to visualise what Plato was referring to

I love this.
To me, it speaks of curiosity for those who do not question where the shadows come and go. For if a shadow they are, then where hath the light that engulfs them? Where does such a beast or spirit exist?
Must I be spent in life to exist? Why can't I dance in the light?
Or must I escape my chains, join the thoughts of logic and reason, and question with boldness my continued contempt for my current duty. For a man who has contempt of his existence, hardly has an existence at all.
Does one watch flickering pictures and ask "How do I become like that?"
I think he does. Man watches a lot of flickering pictures (Tv), showing him what he could have if he just kept his chains a little longer. One more day... Week... Month... Life-time.
"Why hath man toil under the hot sun?" The real question is not why hath man, but rather, why a real man does not.
For I know no man who toil under the hot sun. For no man would subject himself to such a trade. Only those who seek to punish themselves for deeds, or subject themselves to lack of value. For a man who knows his weight would never settle for the spoils of heat, when he can have the comfort of knowledge.

So, why hath man toil under the hot sun, watching flickering pictures and dreaming of "what if's..."? I say because such a man is no man, but a servant in chains. You have been duped I cry to him, for the servants have abandoned their duties, and left you with enough rope to continue, but not enough to hang them with. You see them don't you? Dancing in the fire light, laughing at their prosperity while ordering more, more, more.

The real difference between the slave in chains and the servant dancing in the firelight is me. I am neither, as I have left the cave of confinement, venturing along a path of my choosing. When the heat gets to strong, I rest and think. When the cold gets to bitter, I comfort myself with the company of others. When the night gets to lonely, I close my eyes and remember that I could never be alone, for I am basking in the beauty that is our world. I share in the thoughts of those who think like me. I dance in the true light of knowledge, and I fear no darkness, for I know its name and call it out loud: "Darkness I see, you shall never envelop me, for I am infinite consciousness. Yet if it is your desire, for me to transpire, then I shall leave, to become even more free, under the age old Tree, Of Life.

If I am assuming correctly that you are referring to my words, then most definitely. To you Rob, I owe a great thanks for your work, and if in return I may assist you, I require only that you ask.
