View Full Version : Thatcher under Nuclear Fire

Margaret Thatcher forced François Mitterrand to give her the codes to disable Argentina's deadly French-made missiles during the Falklands war by threatening to launch a nuclear warhead against Buenos Aires, according to a book.
Rendez-vous - the psychoanalysis of François Mitterrand, by Ali Magoudi, who met the late French president up to twice a week in secrecy at his Paris practice from 1982 to 1984, also reveals that Mr Mitterrand believed he would get his "revenge" by building a tunnel under the Channel which would forever destroy Britain's island status.
The book, to be published on Friday, is one of several on France's first Socialist president to mark the 10th anniversary of his death on January 8 1996. Despite a now tarnished reputation, he remains a source of fascination for the French in general and the left in particular. Rendez-vous provides revealing insights into the man's mysterious character, complicated past, paranoia and power complex, but nothing as titillating as his remarks on the former British prime minister.
"Excuse me. I had a difference to settle with the Iron Lady. That Thatcher, what an impossible woman!" the president said as he arrived, more than 45 minutes late, on May 7 1982. "With her four nuclear submarines in the south Atlantic, she's threatening to unleash an atomic weapon against Argentina if I don't provide her with the secret codes that will make the missiles we sold the Argentinians deaf and blind." He reminded Mr Magoudi that on May 4 an Exocet missile had struck HMS Sheffield. "To make matters worse, it was fired from a Super-Etendard jet," he said. "All the matériel was French!"
In words that the psychoanalyst has sworn to the publisher, Meren Sell, are genuine, the president continued: "She's livid. She blames me personally for this new Trafalgar ... I was obliged to give in. She's got them now, the codes."
Mr Mitterrand - who once described Mrs Thatcher as "the eyes of Caligula and the mouth of Marilyn Monroe" - went on: "One cannot win against the insular syndrome of an unbridled Englishwoman. Provoke a nuclear war for a few islands inhabited by three sheep as hairy as they are freezing! But it's a good job I gave way. Otherwise, I assure you, the Lady's metallic finger would have hit the button."
France, he insisted, would have the last word. "I'll build a tunnel under the Channel. I'll succeed where Napoleon III failed. And do you know why she'll accept my tunnel? I'll flatter her shopkeeper's spirit. I'll tell her it won't cost the Crown a penny."

The Falklands is now considered the best-kept secret in the British Army, and being posted there normally meant an easy few years; however, things were different in the 1940sâ€â€even more so for those who had been selected with me.
We were forced to undertake a gruelling month’s training where we were prepared for cold-weather warfare. From being plunged into the icy Atlantic to facing the elements in a tent on South Georgia, the training was arduous and there seemed little sense in the madness that we were forced to undertake. However, after the month’s training we were briefed by a Major and a scientist, and as the mission was relayed to us we all realised that there would be little chance of us all returning, especially if the suspicions proved correct.

However, in 1982, Britain went to war against Argentina over the Falkland Islands (the Malvinas). Its defeat of the Argentinian forces led to the collapse of the fascist military junta that had dominated Argentina for several years. Argentina also had more than a passing interest in Antarctica but, with the deaths of over 2,000 personnel in the Malvinas campaign and facing the possibility of Buenos Aires being bombed, Argentina had no choice but to admit defeat. Yet, whilst admitting the battle was lost, Argentina insisted the war was not over. The Malvinas are Argentinian possessions according to South American atlases, and who is to say that war will not erupt again one day? If that were to happen, Britain would again send an armada to fight because, quite patently, the Falkland Islands are still one of Britain’s most prized dependencies and the reason is quite simple: their close proximity to Antarctica and all its treasures and mysteries that one day will be allowed to be utilized and accessed.44

Still digging for the article claiming UK was on the way to deploy nukes there... iirc, it was a newspaper article from that time.

Nothing to do with fondness, a leader has to make tough unpopular decisions that sometimes don't benefit everyone in the short term. No one enjoys a root canal but they are necessary sometimes.

Oh dear, do we have a Sun reader in our midst? There are the families of 323 Argentinians who perished in the sinking of the Begrano, which posed no threat to British forces and was outside the British-declared Total Exclusion Zone of 370 km, who will disagree with your assertion Thatcher was right to order its sinking.
The Poll Tax, LOL, in the end, even Sun readers couldn't be convinced that was a good idea.

It was a tactical decision, that was correct at the time. It sent clear message, f*ck with me and I will f*ck back.
If her advice had been followed in Gulf War One, Gulf War Two would not have happened.
She was a tough leader, who wasn't afraid to make tough decisions.
As to reading the Sun, well that's the job of the present government. Brown has to read it to see what he should do next, he's not got enough character to make his own policies he led by the media.

The Falkands War was contrived by Thatcher to boost her falling popularity in the early 80s.
Britain was in recession and Thatcher was very unpopular at the time; opinion polls were suggesting the SDP/ Liberals would form the next government. Thatcher was told by the Americans the Argentinians were going to invade the Falkand Islands, so she took the only British Navy frigate out of the area to send a signal to General Galtieri that she wouldn't take any action if they were annexed. When Galteiri did invade, she got what she wanted, and sent in the British troops, who soon retook the islands and were welcomed back with a frenzy of sickening flag wielding patriotism that ensured Thatcher was returned with a huge Commons majority.
The sinking of the Begrano was an evil and unnecessary (and illegal) act that resulted in the loss of lives of 323 people (mainly conscripted Argentinian young men).
The 2 Gulf wars were also orchestrated, but I can't be bother to explain to you why, we'll be here all bloody week. Most wars are and sadly the loss of life is so often cheapened by so-called patriotic idiots and the Murdoch media empire.

This forum truly is a cognitive play ground.
Maybe a few things you may wish to research before singing the praises of good old Thatchers
Why ALL major utilities were sold off at a steal
Why Council housing stock was sold, and the monies ring fenced
Where the money went during the 14 years of peak oil production
Why the mines were closed down
To name but a few
The ills that Britain face today are not from Immigrants, its from Thatchers children. No such thing as society, loads-a-money, Everyman for himself culture. Which has been passed down to the next generation.
Amazing how quickly people forget 1 in 10 unemployed, schools with leaking roofs, not even enough books to go round, sports equipment that was 20 years old, North south divide, 20 month for a knee or hip replacement, people dying on trolley in corridors due to lack of beds, real poverty, substandard housing, care in the community.
Again a very small selection, I am no Labour fan but take it from someone that lived through the Thatcher years there is no comparison.

They didn't have the sale money of millions upon millions of council housing.
They did have the revenue of from the sale of BT,Electric,Gas,Gatwick,Heathrow,Luton,Manchester, Airports, British steel, the whole of our oil industry....you want me to go on there is plenty more!!!!!

I don't disagree he sold half our reserve, but how much reserve did we have? Thatcher sold off a high amount pro-rata.
I'm always dumbfounded how the normal working person can't sit down and look at how many trillions not billions, Thatcher got in the whole sale auction of British assets and peak oil but not even question where it all went.
And to not see the analogy of the Nazis in post war Germany is truly a reflection of the lack of knowledge of average job.

He may have got a good price if most of it was tungsten-cored... about the only thing that made sense of that selloff when viewed with hindsight.
The 'tungsten core' gold bar story, if true, is the biggest financial unexploded bomb in history. Look at the way HSBC kicked out small investors in gold, as if they didn't want the Little People to know what was going on.
Would any countries in possession of salted gold bars even let such news out? What is this incessant drive to buy every ounce of gold with those cash-for-gold companies appearing everywhere?
There's definitely something not right going on behind the scenes with the gold market. Soros trying to fck with our heads recently ads to this.

The last Conservative Government was awful, I remember it and I fucking hated them. This current Government is also awful, if push come to a shove, I'd say they are even worse, though I suppose it's like deciding if Stalin was worse than Hitler.
They are worse as they carry forward the globalist agenda of the New World Order, just as the Tories did previously; it's just a matter of progression; the governments seem worse, because year by year, both Tory and Labour further the agenda of the New World Order.
The police state Labour introduce is merely a continuation of policies originally started by Thatcher and then Major, whose Home Secretary, the revolting Michael Howard, introduced the Criminal Justice Act & Public Order Act of 1994, which was opposed by Labour at the time, and subsequently made worse when they got into power a few years later.
My assertion that BLiar and Brown are worse than Thatcher is meant more as an insult to the Labour Party, rather than any compliment or admiration towards the Tory Party or Maggie Thatcher.

I’m not familiar with the tungsten-cored / salted gold bars subject. Sounds interesting, must research more.
You’re right about Soros, first bad mouthing gold in the media saying it’ll soon plummet and shortly after buying as much of it as he can get his filthy claws on it.
It’s no doubt the gold market is being manipulated, but then again they’re all manipulated! There’s no such thing as true financial cause and effect, the only cause and effect there is the one they artificially and arbitrarily create.

I read in a local paper that Sandwell MBC were going to start building new council houses because some silly women decided it would be a good idea to give them away for a few quid each. My Dad bought a 3 bedroom house for 6 grand ( You would pay more now for a decent car). Any money raised then will dwarf what it's going to cost to build new one's now.
She destroyed the coal mines, so much so we have to import the stuff now & sold off the utility companies so we can all be ripped off in the name of competition.
With the destruction of UK industry in the 80's that today hampered us getting out of todays recession because any recovery certainly won't be industry lead.
