A Classic Text on the Japanese Way of the Sword

Don't know if a book on violence can be considered a positive influence but its a classic, its philosophical and its endured until today. I read it years ago during my martial arts phase. Just thought I would throw it in.

Things like that ^ are why I've always found Japanese culture "rather" peculiar.

Maybe I'll learn a thing or two abot aspects I do like from here because nothing comes to mind just now. I'm a technophobe and I proudly abhor discipline and efficiency. I think Japanese people would call me lazy.

Yakuza (ヤクザ or やくざ)
"893"http://images3.jlist.com/f9/yakuza6.jpg
The word yakuza means 8-9-3. Ya = 8, ku = 9, za = 3. It comes from the Japanese counterpart to Black Jack, Oicho-Kabu. The main difference between the card games is that in Oicho-Kabu the goal is to reach 19 instead of 21. The sum of 8, 9 and 3, is 20, which is good for nothing in Oicho-Kabu. Thus, Yakuza refers to those who are "good for nothing." This doesnt mean that they have no use in the society; it only means that the members are people that somehow dont fit in to society.

Whats the appeal? Whats wrong with British culture?

My appreciation of Japan's culture does not lessen my appreciation of British culture. Nor does my deep love of Italian culture. (per me il paragone della cultura del'europa)

On the contrary, by learning about other culture's and appreciating other civilisations I learn more and appreciate it more.

(thats rhetorical, no answer needed..)

Nevertheless you posted it on a public forum, so it can be responded to.

Rather than ruminate on why some people enjoy other cultures and seem to overlook their own (in this case British) why not start a pre-British culture thread?

On my word, I will be ready to support it.

Now back to the Far East!

I'm not familiar with all of those, but of the ones I know only Black Adder is truly great. And it's not quite recent either.

What we should be saying why are we getting music, movies and stuff from only a handful amount of countries all over the world. It's mostly American, British and now there's at least Japanese culture that's popular world-wide. Artsy people like French movies and that's it. Why don't they show African or other Asian dramas on TV, they hardly even show other European stuff in European countries. Globalization is multiculturalism... sure.

Korean dramas are pretty neat and getting popular in the west too, but I don't think they show them on TV outside of Asia.

So TV sucks, torrents are better.

a lot of the stuff here is the americanised japanese culture that it was inundated with after being occupied by the US after world war 2

in order to totally destroy and then rebuild a shattered japan, the US dropped two atom bombs on an already defeated enemy, one that was already suing for peace

a lot of this is leightweight pseudo american trash culture, an asian vegas

the guy below did his bit to change japan, one of those strange people who seem to pop up in history and leave the world a very different place

tom cruise's character in "the last samurai" was based on him, though that film was a typical hollywood rewriting of history to make a hero from a possible villain

The Japanese love American culture as they see it.

One of the biggest reasons for the Japanese-American's virtual abandonment of their culture won't be found in a public school history book. It is one of America's most embarrassing moments in history. Not only did they drop two nukes, They also sent everyone with a Japanese surname to an internment camp. Stripping them of their liberties, forcing some to abandon established businesses, taking over their houses, and stealing their properties. They were heavily vaccinated in the camps and many women had multiple miscarriages during their stay.
After the war they were set free , but forced to start all over again from square one. Rebuilding their lives as Americans. In a showing of the strong sense of pride held by my people, They set out to "prove" their American-ness to their communities. Japanese was no longer spoken in the home , and any other identifying cultural behaviors were no longer practiced. Japanese has never been offered as a language elective in our public schools , and the story of the internment camps is hardly ever mentioned in history classes.

Hagakure is a practical and spiritual guide for a warrior, drawn from a collection of commentaries by the samurai Yamamoto Tsunetomo, former retainer to Nabeshima Mitsushige, the third ruler of what is now the Saga prefecture in Japan. Tsuramoto Tashiro compiled these commentaries from his conversations with Tsunetomo from 1709 to 1716; however, it was not published until many years afterwards. Hagakure is also known as the The Book of the Samurai, Analects of Nabeshima or the Hagakure Analects.

excerpts:
Recently, people who are called "clever" adorn themselves with superficial wisdom and only deceive others. For this reason they are inferior to dull-wilted folk. A dull- wilted person is direct. If one looks deeply into his heart with the above phrase, there will be no hidden places. It is a good examiner. One should be of the mind that, meeting this examiner, he will not be embarrassed.

To hate injustice and stand on righteousness is a difficult thing. Furthermore, to think that being righteous is the best one can do and to do one's utmost to be righteous will, on the contrary, brig many mistakes. The Way is in a higher
place then righteousness. This is very difficult to discover, but it is the highest wisdom. When seen from this standpoint, things like righteousness are rather shallow

It is not good to settle into a set of opinions. It is a mistake to put forth effort and obtain some understanding and then stop at that. At first putting forth great effort to be sure that you have grasped the bastes, then practicing so that they
may come to fruition is something that will never stop for your whole lifetime. Do not rely on following the degree of understanding that you have discovered, but simply think, "This is not enough."
One should search throughout his whole life how best to follow the Way.

Things like that ^ are why I've always found Japanese culture "rather" peculiar.

Well to be honest that sort of thing tends to get a lot more attention in the west than it does in Japan. As a person living here I can tell that it most certainly is not mainstream or even has a cult following. It's very fringe.

If anything everyday life and media is very sweet/cuddly/cutsie. Almost sickeningly so sometimes.

It's almost impossible to go a day without seeing these

Maybe I'll learn a thing or two abot aspects I do like from here because nothing comes to mind just now. I'm a technophobe and I proudly abhor discipline and efficiency. I think Japanese people would call me lazy.

Well there is no doubt that Japan loves its technology but they also, rather paradoxically, know when to espouse it. A way to get away from modern life is to go to a ryokan (Japanese trafitional hotel) where you sit on tatami floors, wear a yukata (japanese style clothing) and enjoy an onsen (thermal bath) and their gardens.

I'm not familiar with all of those, er.

thank you to the japanese people for voting so many christians in as prime minister of japan in the last 70 years.......despite the fact they make up only 1% of the population....

wiki...

As a Roman Catholic, Aso belongs to the small minority of Japanese Christians; but he has not emphasized his religiosity. While Christians only account for around 1% of the Japanese, Aso is the seventh Christian prime minister of Japan, after Hara Kei, Takahashi Korekiyo, Masayoshi Ōhira, Ichirō Hatoyama, Tetsu Katayama, his own grandfather Shigeru Yoshida, [60] and his succesor, Yukio Hatoyama.

On occasion of his 2009 new year visit to the Shinto Ise Shrine, Aso has publicly performed the hand-clapping in front of the shrine, stating later that he had "prayed for the good of the Japanese people".

Harp of Burma by Michio Takeyama

Probably the greatest//most amazing book I have ever read in my whole lifetime.
...

Michio Takeyama's great 1966 novel Harp of Burma follows the fortunes of a company of Japanese soldiers as they surrender to the British and await repatriation to Japan at the end of the second world war. Not only is Takeyama's story a fascinating portrayal of the war at this time from a Japanese perspective, it is also a strikingly vivid account of the Buddhist religion of Burma, where the story unfolds.
Burmese Buddhism

Takeyama's entire novel teems with accounts of implicit Burmese Buddhist flavor, such as the appearance of numerous facets of the faith such as Buddhist monks and temples, and how the main character Mizushima actually dresses like a monk when scouting for danger with his harp. One of the first places where religion takes center stage however, is not until the third chapter of the second part of the book, "The Green Parakeet."

At this point in the novel, the company of soldiers have surrendered themselves to the British as prisoners of war and entertain the locals in the village near their camp by singing them songs. On seeing a monk (who ends up in fact being a missing and much longed for comrade) in the crowd one day while singing as usual, the narrator comments on the devoutness of the Burmese: "We were much impressed by the way the people of this country respect the priesthood. Their almsgiving is no mere act of charity but one of gratitude to those who do penance for the salvation of all living beings. They don't just hand over their gifts; they kneel and offer them" (Takeyama 45).

This devoutness is observed throughout the book, a trait among the natives without which Mizushima, later revealed to have traveled freely throughout the country in the guise of a Burmese monk of elevated rank, would likely have either starved or even worse from want of the charity offered to the clergy.
"How then shall we live?"

In the same chapter, the narrator goes on to describe a perpetual discussion which the soldiers have regarding which is more profitable: to be raised as the Burmese, whose young men all spend a portion of their youth as monks, or to be raised as the Japanese, whose young men all spend a portion of their youth in the military. The discussion veers close to becoming a dialogue on tradition versus modernity, on whether following traditional values or seeking to move forward is the better path. As Takeyama writes, "But which of these attitudes, of these ways of life, is better for the world and for humanity? Which should we choose?" (Takeyama 47).

While the argument usually ends up in a stalemate among the men of the company, for Mizushima the question of how better to live seems to have been answered in the letter he writes to his comrades as dictated in the third and final section of the novel. He defends the Burmese way against the Japanese modes of thought at the time, writing, "We Japanese have not cared to make strenuous spiritual efforts. We have not even recognized their value. What we stressed was merely a man's abilities, the things he could do -- not what kind of man he was, how he lived, or the depth of his understanding" (Takeyama 129). To Mizushima, the latter are the things he believes supersede the former for the worth of a man's character.
A Higher Calling

Mizushima, having been separated from his company and having escaped both the British army and the clutches of a savage group of cannibals, experiences a sort of "higher calling" in the Burmese jungles on his journey to return and reunite with his friends. Seeing the unburied bones and corpses of his fellow countrymen strewn around the jungle like so much common litter, Mizushima takes it upon himself to bury and hold funerals for his Japanese brothers. In order to move freely throughout the country, he poses as a Burmese monk, thus enabling him to receive food and shelter through charity throughout the country. While all throughout his journey he was simply posing as a monk to get by, the irony is that he decides to stay in Burma, even while his friends are repatriated to Japan, to not only continue his task of burying the unknown dead, but also to become a genuine Burmese monk.

It is in the letter of the final portion of the novel where Mizushima explains himself and his transformation: "As I climbed mountains and forded rivers, and buried the bodies I found lying smothered in weeds or soaked in water, I was harassed by tormenting questions. Why does so much misery exist in the world? Why is there so much inexplicable suffering? What are we to think?" (Takeyama 129-130).

The questions raised in Mizushima's mind about suffering are questions central to the Buddhist faith, which seeks to bring enlightenment through the elimination of suffering through the elimination of the desires which inherently cause it. The quest for the answers to these questions, however unanswerable, is what leads Mizushima to make the choice to stay in Burma. As he continues to write, "No matter what suffering, what unreasonableness, what absurdity we face, we must remain undaunted and show strength of character by meeting it with tranquility. It is my hope to realize this conviction by devoting myself to a religious life" (Takeyama 130).

Takeyama's Harp of Burma is as close a reader can get to an understanding of Burmese Buddhism through the avenue of a modern novel. Set appropriately against an immediately post-World War II background, the questions the novel raises about the value of traditional values versus modern progression, of pacifism versus aggression, and the adherence to one's convictions, despite the cost, are as relevant today as they ever have been.

didnt they create godzilla?

That's a good question. Some say the Americans did and some the Japanese did. I'm looking it up myself right now. One piece of lore states that some American radio DJs made it up in 1947. I know an early film starred American actor Raymond Burr.......

Ah, here's something that seems to be a common thread in Godzilla history:

http://users.ctc.net/millwater/Gbio.htm

.........He was created by Toho movie studios in Japan, and introduced in the 1954 classic film Gojira.

Gojira would be the first of a fifteen movie series which would span more than twenty years. Starting off as grim and deadly serious horror films, the Godzilla series would lighten up to popular culture, play to the kiddie market, and eventually go camp with silly (but somehow still fun) movies that truly deserve their places on MST3K.

Starting with Gojira, the Japanese movies were not only dubbed into English for American release, but also reedited, reworked, and often had American-shot footage added. For various reasons, this "Americanization" usually confuses the continuity of the series and is best taken with a grain of salt... Basically, if you see a white guy in a Godzilla flick speaking English in correct lip-sinc, don't take anything he says in relation to Godzilla's history seriously........

Somewhere there is a write up about how Nissan engineers were saying the KA24e can do over 400 000 miles without a rebuild when looked after, so im not suprised urs is still going.

I know someone whos at 340 000 miles, and were both still waiting for it to let go, spin a bearing, throw a rod, or something, but its still going, original timing chain and all. And its often hauling 3 tonnes down the road with a trailer.

Tough as nails.

I dont know if any manufacturer will ever give us quality engine components like Nissan did back then, even though they are capable. The metals used in the block/piston/rings/bearings are as good as it gets. If they did that now, they wouldnt sell as many new ones, or parts :)

Nissan, they still know how to build good cars though, and their accellerators dont get stuck :p

Fuck Japan my grandfather was a prisoner of war there and they used to starve him and crush his feet with metal shoes to wake him in the morning. What's so good about Japan apart from cutting edge electronics which they get from the Reptilians anyway. What kind of a country has raw fish as its most popular and famous dish, a very weirdo one for sure.

hehe - yea, I especially like the pillow for "socially out-casted loners"Hilarious how the Japanese come up with inventions to deal with their social problems. People call them smart, but this just makes you scratch your head... as in they're lacking logic. Funny but a little revealing.

There's a Youtube user called "TokyoZeppelin" (or something like that) who is from Denmark and makes videos about his experiences in Japan, and anyway he said that the government does all these things to try to prevent suicides, since after all Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. They institute things like building "suicide barriers" in subway stations, which retract from the floor when the subway comes... And they come up with all these different laws such as having the family of the suicide victim pay thousands of dollars for commiting suicide (in basically any public place). I mean wow... So they try to scare people from commiting suicide and that's how they deal with it...

Japan, Japan... Weird and awesome at the same time. I also heard that they have all these crazy vending machines, with one that even sells dirty underwear that purports that it's been worn by little girls. I think there might even be Youtube videos of it.

What about an NR750 :) Japanese make excellent V4s but you have to give it to the Italians for the twins (someone from America will complain soon).

For me it's Japanese 500cc 2 strokes... RDs, RG's and NS's. Who cares if they didn't stop or go round corners.

Edit: Nori rules.
;) Agreed! (+1) 2strokes rule!! The rd/rz(?) 500's were never sold here in the U.S. Dammit...

Knives from Seki City are nice too....
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3359/3209096202_77858d5910.jpg
Approximately 700 years ago, during the Kamakura Era, a number of swordsmiths escaped from war-torn cities and relocated to Seki, seeking fine quality soil, water and charcoal that is necessary for the making of swords. Ever since, the fame of Seki swords has been enhanced and the production accelerated with the establishment of distinctive sword forging technique.

After the end of the Warring State Period, demands for swords decreased, and many of the swordsmiths had begun to produce cutlery for agricultural and household use. Whatever the use, the cutlery produced in Seki was that of high quality, fully utilizing the expertise for sword making, and came to be known as "sharp knife that does not snap or bend". After the Meiji Restoration, a wide variety of cutlery began to be produced, matching the changing age and the introduction of new technology. Seki is now renowned as one of the greatest production centers of cutlery throughout the world, equaling Solingen of Germany.

I feel I can speak to anyone with kind word. Inspired by nature’s simple truths, Tomihiro’s images and verse give a rare insight into the depths of misery he faced and eventually overcame when in 1970, at the age of 24, the artist was left paralyzed from the neck down. His work also allows a glimpse of the heights the human spirit can scale. Holding a brush in his mouth, each stroke on paper brims with hope, courage, and an earnest joy of living. Do katanas originated in Japan? I wonder where and when and who invented this kind of sword? What I really love about Japan is there culture.. and all about "samurai" and ninja stuffs.

samurai sword (http://www.weapons-universe.com/Swords/Samurai_Swords.shtml)

Yes the katana sword is one of my fav, it originates in Japan.
Ninjitsu, however, is illegal there now...

How many Africans were given asylum in Japan last year?
How easy is it for a non-Japanese to get citizenship in Japan?
What is the ethnicity of 95+ % of Japanese citizens? Are they not indigenous?
How many non-tourist Arabs, Negros and Europeans do you typically see on your way to work?

Can't think of any TV presenters in England that are Japanese or even mixed.

U can feel your rectum filling up with water and then u shoot it out it's a nice feeling actually and your bum feel nice and fresh.
I want one, not for the thrill of course ;)

Alternative and does the trick, crouch on top of a bowl (or container of choice) containing salt and water and use one's hand to wipe and splash about (but better to use a bit of paper before doing this) the trick is to rest the bowl on the edge of a bath or something so you don't wet the floor (takes skill and practice)

After washing wipe with towel.

I call it the double bum washing ritual.

You can do the same with your cock, wash it with salt water, best to use a seperate bowl (or whatever) than the bum bowl. careful the waters not to hot though. roll your forsekin back and forth while washing it keeps it really clean and free from fungal infections, and heals any wounds (if you've had a rough shag or ham shank) repeat up to three times daily if you got a sore cock.

Once every day or so will keep it in tip top condition.
I am not joking, honestly.

Britain; 1500 Mosques and rising faster than you can count.
Japan; 30 - 40 Mosques

Thumbs up to the Japanese  They have sense unlike us dumb Europeans.

According to japanfocus.org,[14] 'There are currently between 30 and 40 single-story mosques in Japan

From your wiki quote.

According to japanfocus.org,[14] 'There are currently between 30 and 40 single-story mosques in Japan, plus another 100 or more apartment rooms set aside, in the absence of more suitable facilities, for prayers. Many Muslim communities have plans to build mosques in the near future.

Like er.....that one near ground zero in the Cordoba building community centre.

ARGGHHH! MOSQUE ON GROUND ZERO! ARGGHH! Remember that?

Again from your link

The majority of estimates of the Muslim population have been put at around 100,000 in estimates.

Now according to wiki we have 1,591,000 in the UK and around 1500 mosques.

Islam in the United Kingdom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So doing the math the Japanese have about one mosque for every 714 muslims while the UK 1 mosque for around every 1000 muslims.
