Mall security guard accuses shopper of being a paedophile for photographing his own son

According to his blog, Kevin visited the Bridges Shopping Centre in Sunderland with his son to spend the £10 his father gave the boy on a family visit. While there, he seated his son on a coin-operated train ride and snapped a photo of him with his cameraphone. At this point, a Bridges security guard came by and ordered him to stop taking pictures. He said that it was mall policy, and implied that Kevin was taking pictures because he was a paedophile. Kevin told him that this was ridiculous and took his son to find his wife and get out of the mall. He also took a picture of the security guard "so that if I later wanted to make a complaint to the centre I would be able to identify him."

Outside of the mall, Kevin was stopped by a police constable who had received a complaint from mall security that a suspicious potential paedophile had been taking pictures on its premises. The PC threatened to arrest Kevin "for creating a public disturbance" and ordered him to delete the photo of his son. The PC also averred that the Bridges Shopping Centre is a hotbed of paedophile assaults.

For the record: It's not clear to me how a fully clothed child on a mall coin-op ride is harmed by having his likeness captured by a camera, even if that camera is in the possession of a paedophile. And I'm pretty sure that taking pictures of your kids having fun on rides isn't a warning sign of paedophilia (I'm in big trouble if it is! By Cory Doctorow at 3:45 AM February 24, 2010 ).

In my more paranoid moments I think all this is the start of a sliding scale of state involvement in what is essentially personal/family business and an increasingly ridiculous list of reasons to take kids away from parents; fat kids are snatched to protect them, more stories of parents from hell abusing and killing their children, kids having kids themselves and not having a clue how to look after them, etc

The next thing will be but you could be a paedo so we're taking your child to protect them, the state will raise all kids equally and no more child abuse will happen! Of course they'll all be raised to be tolerant, socially responsable and logical and not in away way indoctrinated robots like in Brave New World...

Simple thing here is to contact the Centre, by post (not email) and CC at the bottom the local newspaper. Send it recorded, give them a week and ask them why it slanders customers by calling them 'paedophiles'.

Someone should do this and refuse to delete the pictures, offer the police to arrest them and then force them to take it to court. The reason the police end up taking details then leaving is that the laws are so weak that they cannot stand legal scrutiny, they are not meant to stand up in court, only to shake anyone who has had contact with the police and make them afraid to challenge authority in the future. Bullies of all kinds need to be stood up to and forced to show their hand.

Dad Branded A Paedophile Over Pic Of Son

A man who took a picture of his son while they were out shopping was accused of being a paedophile and threatened with arrest.

Kevin Geraghty-Shewan had taken four-year-old Ben to the Bridges Shopping Centre in Sunderland to spend £10 the boy had been given as a treat.

He told Sky News: "Ben spotted a children's ride which had a train on it and wanted to have a go because he's obsessed with trains.

"When he got on my wife suggested we take a picture of him.

"I took the picture on my phone and suddenly this security guard came up and told me it wasn't allowed because I could be a paedophile.

"I told him Ben was my own son. But he said I couldn't prove it. He said there is a real problem with paedophiles and that if I didn't like it, he'd call the manager.

"A few minutes later a policeman walked in and approached me, so they must have been tracking me on the CCTV.

"He said he'd received a complaint that a man matching my description was taking pictures of children and wanted my name and address.

"I told him it was ridiculous because it was my own son. He then started asking me what I was doing in Sunderland, asked for my name and address and told me he had the right to delete my pictures.

"I got annoyed and raised my voice a bit, then he threatened me with arrest for breach of the peace."

Mr Geraghty-Shewan was so outraged by the incident, he posted a picture of the security guarde on his website.

When contacted by Sky News the Bridges said in a statement: "We take the safety at all our shopping centres very seriously.

"We do ask our security guards across the estate to be diligent in implementing our security measures, which includes monitoring photography in our centres.

"Unfortunately on this occasion what should have been a simple polite conversation led to a misunderstanding and we apologise for any offence caused.

"It is always our aim to implement our security procedures with the minimum of fuss and disruption to our shoppers."
