Sexuality is closely related to spirituality in several ways. In its negative aspects of lust, sexual excess, degradation and rape, it appears as the antithesis of spirituality, and in this light it has been seen in the Christian tradition. However, in its positive aspects our sexuality can open our heart to love, and enable us to have experiences similar to meditative states and mystical bliss during or instead of an orgasm and its afterglow. In a less obvious way, sexual energies can be channeled upward to develop our energy centers or chakra system and higher energy bodies. According to esoteric and yoga teachings, this is all part of our spiritual evolution.

The idea of celibacy for priests, nuns and monks is to spiritualize sexual energies as in meditation, rituals and other devotional practices. While this generally involves conscious exercises as in yoga, Christian mystics commonly transformed their energies without conscious awareness through intense devotion. If religious celibates fight to suppress their sexuality, they misunderstand the deeper reason for the practice of celibacy, and block their spiritual evolution on that level. If devotional practices do not lead to the transmutation of sexual energies then it is much better to find a natural outlet. Suppression always leads to problems.?

My purpose here is to explore the many ways how men have also been wounded- such as the lack of sexual initiation, circumcision or social factors- and to suggest some initial steps men can take to begin healing.

I have worked privately with over a thousand men as an instructor of basic Tantric and Taoist practices and as a sexual healer over the last ten years. I have loved many men in my life, including six younger brothers. However, I must admit that it is with a limited confidence that I approach the subject of male sexual woundings because I am not in a man's body. I can't access the same cellular memory as when I talk about women. Nevertheless, I have seen, felt and heard men's woundings and the unnecessary suffering that results from having a penis.

Attempting to understand how a man experiences himself as a sexual being requires that we take a closer look at how we've all been wounded. We've all been victims of a socialization and discrimination process which defines our sexual identities and roles. We are seen only as either a "man" or a "woman. Eventually I came to understand how gender roles hurt everyone. Before being seen as a human being with very individual characteristics and choices, we are being labeled by our genitals as a male or a female and treated accordingly within our culture.

Today's women carry the traumatic imprints of millennia of injury and humiliation on a cellular level in their wombs and bodies. These memories are reaffirmed as women experience painful childbirth, abortions, forceful sex and unfulfilled, incomplete orgasms. Most women choose to compromise their vast potential by remaining in a state of denial about their own sexual needs, wants and desires. Conditioned by the media to feel insecure about their bodies and to compete with their sisters for available men, women feel disenfranchised and seldom realize their full sexual prowess.

How do we, as women, reclaim our sexual power?

Sexuality can be highly spiritual enhancing. Sometimes two lovers who practice this: I don't know what it's called but they start going without it for a period (celibacy) and THEN they both indulge in the act regularly can produce high magic. Of course it's magic of the soul. I've also had this theory (only mine btw) that an orgasm is a mini Black Sun, which is a very powerful source. The black sun has been described as a cosmic flower. There are certain sexual cultures that link sexuality with flowers, especially the lotus and the rose mainly.

Sex and food philosophy, sex and flowers philosophy, sex and dreaming philosophy, ect are deep understandings of how sexuality can be a form of sacred passage that will enable some to reach a higher state.

In this day and age when people fuck as easily as they shake hands, it's nice to see someone remembering the sacred side of sex.

Tantra, Kama Sutra, Eros - very nice and sacred. Potentially dangerous to the spiritually immature and unprepared (sudden kundalini awakening).

The ideal is to allow Eros to develop into Filos and finally Agape.

Good luck.
