I'm reading an interesting book entitled Arab Society & Culture ( edited by Samir & Rosanne Saad Khalaf). I was drawn to a section that spoke about how the Islamic Revival affected the type of entertainment in countries like Egypt, especially music. It was seen as corrupting and certain popular imams called on artists to retire from their chosen career.
Of course, my topic title is rhetorical; I have no doubt that the elite were behind the scenes manipulating the Islamic Revival. It's an area I want to study more because in a way, I think it'll trace a lot of present day stuff in the Middle East, and the U.K. too.
