A lot of people are hung up on homosexuality. They either cannot understand or choose to not try to understand, therefore making simple acceptance of gays and lesbians impossible for these people. Conservative politicians and the religious right have led the way in feeding the flames of intolerance with their distorted and ridiculous views on homosexuality. The idiocy ranges from “it’s a lifestyle choice” to “it’s a mental disorder”. Well, here’s a new one.

Michael Schwartz, the chief of staff for Republican Senator Tom Coburn, shows us the degree to which bigotry and/or religious zeal can turn someone into an absolute imbecile.

Homosexuality is inflicted on people… But all pornography is homosexual pornography because all pornography turns your sexual drive inwards. And that in fact is what it does. I know couples now who are struggling with the husband’s addiction to pornography. It’s a terrible thing. And that’s what happens. And, you know, if it doesn’t turn you homosexual, it at least renders you less capable of loving your wife. And it’s something you need to be healed of.

Really? And what “healing” might Mr. Schwartz have in mind? A weekend, perhaps, with disgraced evangelical Ted Haggard?

Does it not frighten and dismay you that people like this have some input in the way in which this country is governed?

A Lesbian Mother’s Struggle

Tennessee has had its issues with racism as well as allowing guns in both parks and bars. This state, however, reached a new low last year when a Tennessee Trial Court denied a mother, Angel Chandler, overnights with her teenage children simply because of her sexual orientation and because she lived with her lesbian partner of 10 years. This was despite a psychological evaluation which stated that Chandler’s partner was a positive influence on the children. To support it’s denial the trial court invoked a local ‘paramour clause’ which is a “legal restriction that prevents a divorce(e)’s lover from staying in the house overnight while he or she has custody of children from the previous marriage. Heterosexuals can get around this clause by getting married.” Homosexuals in Tennessee do not have the right to marry.

After the trial court’s ruling and in order to be compliant with the court’s order, Chandler and her partner relocated and purchased a duplex so her partner could sleep on one side of the duplex while Chandler and her children slept on the other. Locating to another state on the heels of a custody battle put a great strain on Chandler’s relationship and economic well being.

After suffering the legal inequity from the trial court, Chandler, through the ACLU, decided to fight and took her case up on appeal. The Tennessee Court of Appeals recently handed down their opinion and ordered the matter back to the trial court to reconsider it’s earlier order banning Chandler’s overnights with her children while her partner was in the same house.

The appellate court found: “that the “paramour clause” – a local rule the trial court relied on in its earlier decision, “cannot bind the hands of a trial court to make decisions that are in the best interest of the children who come before the court.” The case will now be sent back to the trial court with the order that it reconsider the parenting plan, this time with the best interests of the children placed ahead of the local rule it had followed before.”

Props to the ACLU for taking this case and to the Tennessee Court of Appeals for recognizing the error of the lower court in denying this mother’s ability to effectively parent her children in Tennessee on the grounds of her sexual orientation.

A step in the right direction for gay and lesbian rights.

After years of denying they were preparing to build nuclear weapons, comes this:

President Obama and leaders of Britain and France accused Iran on Friday of building a secret underground plant to manufacture nuclear fuel, saying the country has hidden the covert operation from international weapons inspectors for years.

President Nicholas Sarkozy of France, appearing beside Mr. Obama, said that Iran had deadline of two months to comply with international demands or face increased sanctions.

“The level of deception by the Iranian government, and the scale of what we believe is the breach of international commitments, will shock and anger the entire international community,” Prime Minister Gordon Brown of Britain said, standing on the other side of Mr. Obama. “The international community has no choice today but to draw a line in the sand.”

American officials said that they had been tracking the covert project for years, but that Mr. Obama decided to make public the American findings after Iran discovered, in recent weeks, that Western intelligence agencies had breached the secrecy surrounding the project.


There’s no way for Iran to lie themselves out of this one, though of course they’ll try. Slowly but surely, President Obama’s foreign policy approach is paying dividends. By scrapping the missile defense plan in Eastern Europe which among other things, satisfied Russia, he’s weakened one of Iran’s few remaining allies’ ability to defend this rogue nation.

With this latest development combined with Iranians taking to the streets as part of the Green Revolution and Obama’s overture towards the Islamic world, Iran is finding itself further isolated from the world community.

The plot thickens.

As is typical with anything concerning the president these days, the conservative media went nuts when the above tape came out last week. They claimed the school was trying to indoctrinate the children. The school was temporarily in lock down when the principle began receiving death threats. Sigh.

My belief is that the teacher was wrong in having her students praise anyone, president or otherwise. It is not a teacher’s duty to impart her political beliefs on a bunch of 8 year olds. As for the overreaction from the right, it’s just typical of their hypocrisy.

It astounds me that anyone would actually come to the defense of Roman Polanski. Some have gone as far as to call his arrest in Switzerland the culmination of a witch hunt. They talk of his charm and intelligence, his genius even, as if any of it could somehow make his deed any less reprehensible. Poland and France are pleading that Switzerland and the United States release him from custody.

Why?

Here is a man who drugged, raped and sodomized a 13 year old girl. He pleaded guilty to the charges and when he felt his plea bargain would not be accepted, he fled the country. He’s been a fugitive for over 30 years. He is a criminal.

Let him have his day in court like everyone else.

Normally I would not waste space on yet another celebrity sex scandal, but the Polanski case is rather illustrative of how a certain group of people feel they are above the laws, and band together to protect each other from that law, acting more like a high school clique than the social leaders they like to pose as.

This attempt to help Polanski evade the consequences of a crime he had already admitted to committing is going to flash back on Hollywood, mostly at the box office. As the poverty increases in America, the lifestyles of the rich and famous will inspire a great deal of resentment which will tarnish Hollywood's carefully manicured public image. Seeing a display of top celebrities espouse a "We are above the laws you must all obey" will only accelerate the process, and we will see a drop in ticket sales/rentals/cable pay per view revenues.

The good news is that many of the same people now trying to polish the Polanski turd are the same ones that bashed Rosie O'Donnell, Charlie Sheen, Sean Penn, Mary Cotillard, etc. etc. etc. for daring to suggest that the government's story of 9-11 was not the truth. So as these self-righteous hypocritical stars fall, the stars of the real heroes will have a chance to shine as they deserve.

A tragic story…

A judge has sentenced a Wisconsin couple to 10 years probation and 30 days a year in jail for the next six years for praying instead of seeking medical care for their dying 11-year-old daughter, but the jail term was stayed pending appeals.

The Neumanns were convicted at separate trials of second-degree reckless homicide in Madeline Neumann’s March 2008 death from undiagnosed diabetes and could have received up to 25 years in prison.

Prosecutors contended the parents should have rushed the girl to a hospital because she couldn’t walk, talk, eat or drink. Madeline died on the floor of the family’s rural home as people surrounded her and prayed. Someone called 911 when she stopped breathing.

While some might feel anger at the light sentence given these misguided parents, I’m not. I don’t believe that any amount of time behind bars could do anything more for these people that the needless death of their child has or has not done to make them realize their ignorant ways. What I would do is consider removing any other children this couple might have.

The bigger message here is understanding the dangers inherent in religion and other beliefs which require an unquestioning dose of blind faith. As an atheist I have a number of problems with religion and it’s not because I cannot see the good which can derive from believing in a loving God. My concern lies instead with religion’s insistence on a faith which has the capacity to shut down one’s ability to reason and apply rational solutions to everyday problems. Religion is often the means and justification by which one turns a blind eye to science or allows one to become a suicide bomber or, as in this sad story, allows a sick child to die.

To be completely blunt and at the risk of offending many, I believe that religion has the capacity to make people selectively stupid. I don’t say this as a broad generalization but more as a means to highlight what can happen when one does not balance faith with reason. I’d like to think that the two can coexist and for many, faith adds to their understanding and enjoyment of life. For others…an 11-year-old girl lies dead on the floor.

On Nov. 1, a law in Oklahoma will go into effect that will collect personal details about every single abortion performed in the state and post them on a public website. Here are the first eight questions that women will have to reveal:

1. Date of abortion
2. County in which abortion performed
3. Age of mother
4. Marital status of mother
(married, divorced, separated, widowed, or never married)
5. Race of mother
6. Years of education of mother
(specify highest year completed)
7. State or foreign country of residence of mother
8. Total number of previous pregnancies of the mother
Live Births
Miscarriages
Induced Abortions

Although the questionnaire does not ask for name, address, or “any information specifically identifying the patient,” as Feminists for Choice points out, these eight questions could easily be used to identify a woman in a small community. “They’re really just trying to frighten women out of having abortions,” Keri Parks, director of external affairs at Planned Parenthood of Central Oklahoma, said.

This is nothing more than another attempt to intimidate women, a step up from screaming at them outside abortion clinics and a step down from shooting the doctors who perform their abortions.

Let me ask again: How can any thinking conservative not be totally embarrassed by the deplorable tactics used by their fellow cons? The right has evolved into a mudpit attracting every neanderthal with a cause. What a waste of humanity.

The President hit all the right buttons at his anticipated speech at the annual dinner of the gay civil rights advocacy group’s Human Rights Campaign.

“I will end ‘don’t ask-don’t tell. We should not be punishing patriotic Americans who have stepped forward to serve the country. We should be celebrating their willingness to step forward and show such courage … especially when we are fighting two wars.”

“I appreciate that many of you don’t believe progress has come fast enough. Do not doubt the direction we are heading and the destination we will reach.”

“I’m here with a simple message: I’m here with you in that fight.”

While his words were welcome, the gay and lesbian community are frustrated at the slow progress so far. Pretty words just aren’t cutting it for them anymore.

“The president and Nobel winner came and paid his respects, but tomorrow many will ask: What’s his plan, what’s his timetable?”

Andrew Sullivan takes an even stronger stance.

“[T]he sad truth is: he is refusing to take any responsibility for his clear refusal to fulfill clear campaign pledges on the core matter of civil rights and has given no substantive, verifiable pledges or deadlines by which he can be held accountable. What that means, I’m afraid, is that this speech was highfalutin bullshit. There were no meaningful commitments within a time certain, not even a commitment to fulfilling them in his first term; just meaningless, feel-good commitments that we have no way of holding him to. Once the dust settles, ask yourself. What did he promise to achieve in the next year? Or two years? Or four years? The answer is: nothing.”

While I can understand Sullivan’s frustration, his tone is harsh and his words unfair. The President has been in office for nine months, having walked into a situation not unlike a mayor of New Orleans being voted in the day after Katrina. Two wars, an economic crisis and health care reform all required immediate action by the President. Add to this a foreign policy which had to be addressed to repair the damage left by eight years of bravado claptrap by Bush. And all of this within a climate of hate led by an opposition intent on taking down Obama by any and all means available. And finally, there exists a public where 50% still ignorantly believe that homosexual behavior is morally wrong.

I’m with Joe Solmonese on this one.

“We have never had a stronger ally in the White House. Never,” Joe Solmonese, the group’s president, said at the dinner before Obama spoke. In an interview, he said the Obama administration has been working with the group on a range of issues “on an almost weekly and sometimes daily basis.”

Robert Lowry, who’s vying for Wasserman Schultz’s seat, initially described his target as a joke. Minutes later, he called it a mistake.
Others refused to apologize for the Southeast Broward Republican Club event, featuring assault rifles and handguns. A conservative activist said they should stand up for their beliefs in the heavily Democratic county.

Has all rational thought ceased to exist from everyone on the right? Every day brings a new act of stupidity from these people. They’re like a bunch of 11-year-olds in grownup’s clothing. No one is being fooled by their childish and ignorant antics except for the simpletons who would believe there is anything remotely humorous or intelligent about shooting a cardboard cutout of your political opponent.

The media reported that hate radio host Rush Limbaugh is involved in a bid to purchase the National Football League’s St. Louis Rams franchise. Many sports media figures lambasted the idea of Limbaugh owning an NFL team, with one writer saying it “would definitely hurt” the Rams while another said his “head exploded after hearing this Limbaugh news” because he is “a pungent bowl of stark raving bigoted lunacy.”

Now, the players themselves are piling on. Specifically, many African-American players have explicitly stated that they would never play for a team that Rush Limbaugh owns. “All I know is from the last comment I heard, he said in (President) Obama’s America, white kids are getting beat up on the bus while black kids are chanting ‘right on,’” New York Giants defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka told the New York Daily News, adding, “I don’t want anything to do with a team that he has any part of.”

New York Jets linebacker Bart Scott said…

I can only imagine how his players would feel. I know I wouldn’t want to play for him. He’s a jerk. He’s an —. He could offer me whatever he wanted, I wouldn’t play for him. … I wouldn’t play for Rush Limbaugh. My principles are greater and I can’t be bought.”
