I LOVE YOU
Giving out free food in your community is easy, a lot of fun, very rewarding and brings people together. Here are two examples that may inspire you:
Food Not Bombs
Food Not Bombs is a loose-knit group of independent collectives, serving free vegan and vegetarian food to others. Food Not Bombs' ideology is that myriad corporate and government priorities are skewed to allow hunger to persist in the midst of abundance. To demonstrate this (and to reduce costs), a large amount of the food served by the group is surplus food from grocery stores, bakeries and markets that would otherwise go to waste. This group exhibits a form of Franchise activism.
First Principles
Food Not Bombs is an effort to feed anyone who is hungry. Each chapter collects surplus food that would otherwise go to waste from grocery stores, bakeries and markets, sometimes incorporating dumpster diving, then prepares it into community meals which are served for free to anyone who is hungry.
The central beliefs of the group are:
• If governments and corporations around the world spent as much time and energy on feeding people as they do on war, no one would go hungry.
• There is enough food in the world to feed everyone, but so much of it goes to waste needlessly, as a direct result of capitalism and militarism.
• Vegan food is both healthy and nonviolent.
Food Not Bombs also tries to call attention to poverty and homelessness in society by sharing food in public places and facilitating gatherings of poor, homeless and other disenfranchised people. There are three tenets to the Food Not Bombs philosophy:
• Decision making by consensus
• Nonviolence
• Vegetarianism
Anyone who wants to cook may cook, and anyone who wants to eat may eat. Food Not Bombs strives to include everyone. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_Not_Bombs
Ten years ago when I lived in Melbourne, some friends and I met some people who started a FnB chapter. We thought it was a great idea and started a meal night in our area (Collingwood). We raised some cash through the bands we were in at the time. This article explains how Melbourne FnB got started: http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/7729/fnbpage.htm
It was pretty funny back then, a bunch of chaotic characters, an unroadworthy van and shifting places to cook at. Now, after doing a search on the net cos I lost contact with the people involved years ago, it seems to have morphed into a stable organisation: http://food-not-bombs.blogspot.com/
And I found this video: http://ia331330.us.archive.org/2/items/FoodNotBombsMelbourne/food_not_bombs.mov You can see the quality of meals and hear the positive comments from the people eating at the end of it.
Lots of info from all over the world on the net.
We delivered boxes of food to Asylum Seekers from East Timor (this was before the Australian government had decided to play hero and 'liberate' East Timor... PRS) and others used to go to protests and picket lines and serve up hot meals, etc.

Lentil As Anything
A few months ago I was in Melbourne and I ate at Lentil as Anything. It was African night and they had a band, a great vibe, art displays and there was dancing and a selection of Japanese, African and other veggie meals... and it was all free! If you want to donate you donate and if you don't you don't (I assume if your broke or a real miser!) ... we had to ask them how to donate cos we didn't see any obvious 'please donate here' signs or anything like that... great vibe of generous people. I don't know much about them but from the flyer I read they seem to do a lot for the migrant community in Melbourne... they're not just a food collective.
They currently have three venues in Melbourne.
Their philosophy/constitution is pretty cool! :)
Lentil as Anything (L.A.A) is a non profit Incorporated association, celebrating compassion, individuality and artistic expression.
We embody a philosophy that challenges and defies our money driven consumerist society.
The Lentil As Anything Philosophy/Constitution
1. The Association is a not-for-profit body focused on providing assistance to the members and the greater community.
2. The form of assistance provided will be determined on the immediate needs of the applicant, and may include such things as• the provision of food• supportive and secure community environment• assistance with housing• assistance with legal services• liaising with Immigration• medical needs• informal friend-in-need services such as opening bank accounts, transportation and interpretation• tutoring in English and assistance with computer literacy• providing cultural platforms including print media, music venues, art exhibition space• kitchen for culinary expressionism• mentoring and training in hospitality related skills.
3. Roles and responsibilities amongst the volunteers will be on a rotation basis to maximize a rounded awareness and skills acquisition within the Association.
4. There are no rules.
5. Differences of opinion will be encouraged and outcomes will be the result of consultation through fortnightly meetings.
• We are undecided at this stage about the sixth rule due to excessive consultation and fortnightly meetings and shall reach a conclusion the moment someone turns on the light and shows me where they hid my shoe. Bastards!
6. Special focus shall be given to those reluctant to voice opinions and participate in the formulation of our collective character.
7. No individual member has the authority to command or order another to perform a duty.
8. If an individual observes something that needs to get done, that individual shall attend to this need to the best of their ability, and thus lead by example.
9. No individual may fiscally profit from this organization nor treat it as a means to an income.
10. The enterprise relies on the creative inspiration and generosity of its participants and therein shall maximize inclusivity and embrace diversity to the best of its ability.
May Lentil As Anything continue to thrive through your support. Our existence relies wholly on your generosity.
