Security can do nothing.
I worked in loss prevention before and like everything else in this world- The way things seem may not be how they ARE. Security actually did the right thing here though.
First off- Insurance covers the Televisions. The Televisions (and any other damage) is minuscule to the amount Wal Mart would have been obligated to pay out in comp and medical expenses if a employee (security or otherwise) had been hit in the head with that bat.
Security would have been told to stand down until the Police arrived and focus on crowd control, getting customers out of the area, etc.
-IF security apprehended this man and caused him injuries- The store could be held responsible.
Also (contrary to belief) its against the law for store security to detain anyone against their will- They use tricks to get shoplifters to "agree" to being detained. They cannot search you either.
EVEN if you throw a television in a cart and run out of the store laughing as the "theft detection" buzzers go off- They cant detain you. They will follow you (at a distance) to either get your plate number and make/model OR be on the radio with a supervisor who is on the phone with the Police giving updated directions.
Anyhow, there is some State to State Variances in what Loss Prevention/Security can do but unless you are physically attacking a PERSON its in their best interest to wait for the Police.
Also note: I did loss prevention YEARS AGO so stuff may have changed a bit but not much.

good man, we need more of this sort of thing
i bought a telly few years back and was surprised when they insisted i give them my address, or no sale.
as the ad tells us in the UK (or used to until floods of complaints made the twats back down a bit), we're all in the database
in the UK you are presumed guilty unless proven innocent on the BBC blood tax. even if you have no telly they will hassle and intimidate you with letters, visits from stazi etc

WOW-
Its not that bad in the US- Yet.
It would be nice if the guy were making a political statement or something but my understanding (if this is the same event) it was done only for "kicks".

Walmart TV basher was on depression medication
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The man who attacked a row of flat-screen televisions at a Walmart in Lilburn on Wednesday told police that he was on medication for depression.
Gwinnett County Jail Westley Strellis, 23, of Lawrenceville, is accused of smashing more than 24 TVs at the Walmart on Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn. The TVs are reported to be valued at more than $22,000, police said
Westley Strellis of Lilburn was arrested without a fight after he picked up an aluminum baseball bat from the sporting goods aisle, then methodically bashed 29 TVs.
A store security camera captured a man walking casually down the TV aisle of the store on Lawrenceville Highway as he took one swing after another. A half-dozen fidgety onlookers stood at the end of the aisle, some of them backing away as he approached.
Finally, he flipped the bat away and sat on the floor.
When a Lilburn police officer approached later, Strellis was still sitting there, and he extended his arms and gestured for the officer to put handcuffs on him, according to a police report of the incident obtained by the AJC.
The arresting officer, Alex Hunt, found a bottle of prescription medicine in Strellis' pocket. Strellis told Hunt the medication, Effexor XR, was a treatment for depression.
Patients who use the drug should "be watched for becoming agitated, irritable, hostile, aggressive, impulsive, or restless," according to the Web site of the drug maker.
Strellis, 24 (police said Wednesday that he was 23, but the police report says he is 24), was taken to the Gwinnett County jail and charged with 29 counts of criminal damage to property in the second degree. The police report said the damage totaled $22,887.

"The man who attacked a row of flat-screen televisions at a Walmart in Lilburn
on Wednesday told police that he was on medication for depression."
That should read "the man who allegedly attacked ... "
I hate it when the media pronounces someone guilty before they've had
a trial.
