Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper says his country will use its G8 presidency to press the club of world's richest nations for more Iran sanctions.

“Canada will use its G8 presidency to continue to focus international attention and action on the Iranian regime" and "work with its allies to find strong and viable solutions, including sanctions, to hold Iran to account," AFP quoted Harper as saying in a statement on Wednesday.

“It is time for Iran to end its defiance of the international
community, suspend its enrichment activity and take immediate steps toward transparency and compliance by halting the construction of new enrichment sites, and fully cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)," he said.

Harper's comments come after Tehran declared that it would begin the process to enrich uranium at 20 percent for use in its research reactor after the IAEA failed to help the country buy it.

Iran needs the uranium to produce radioisotopes— which are used to treat patients — at the research reactor.

Under international law, the IAEA is obliged to provide Iran with nuclear fuel required for peaceful purposes.

The West has been exerting pressure on Iran to force the country into delivering the stores of its low-enriched uranium in exchange for 20 percent enriched uranium after a considerable delay.

Yes I saw this on Russia today .( news channel )

the western world is being critisised because those sanctions are for no reason other than a totally invented lie !

apparently the only reason why Nato wants to sanction Iran is because Iran is asking for a garrentee that if Iran is to hand over enriched uranium , that they will not be stitched up after handing it over , all they want is a deleivery of power uranium for electrical power stations to be delivered on time with the correct amount in axchange , is all they ask ,

and the west wants to sanction them over that ????????????????????????

fkin war mongering again is the west .

No wonder they hate us because of our leaders .

why the hell do terrorists keep missing their targets ?

Outrageous. Of course, you'll never hear this sort of statement:

“Canada will use its G8 presidency to continue to focus international attention and action on the Israeli regime" and "work with its allies to find strong and viable solutions, including sanctions, to hold Israel to account...It is time for Israel to end its defiance of the international community..."

Iran isn't even a threat. North Korea HAS nukes, as do India and Pakistan who are teetering on the edge. Meanwhile, Israel is more of a threat to world peace than any Arab/Persian nation. But we better put more sanctions on Iran, cause that will really help.

"No wonder they hate us because of our leaders ."

I spent Christmas and New Year in Iran. They don't hate us, they love us, and worse still, they love Mr Tony Blair and Mr Gordon Brown and couldn't stop telling me how marvellous they are compared to their own government.! and were astonished that I ahem didn't share their admiration. I think it's a case of 'your enemy's enemy is your friend, and boy do they hate their Government and religious leaders.
