TEHRAN, September 23 (RIA Novosti) - Part of a Russian-made copy of the Koran, etched onto sheets of 99.9% pure gold, is currently on display in Iran's capital at an exhibition of sacred Islamic texts.

Fourteen sheets of the 162-page book were sent to Tehran for the exhibition, which started on September 22 and will run until October 2.

The book, worth $5.9 million, is a faithful copy of the Uthman Koran, considered to be the world's oldest surviving copy of Islam's holy book. The golden version even replicates a stain of blood believed to be from the assassination of the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, which is still visible on the original.

The Uthman Koran, also known as Osman's Koran, was previously held at a mosque in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan. The eight-century holy book is now the property of the Russian state, and is stored at the Institute of Oriental Studies in St. Petersburg.

The Golden Koran was made by the Moscow Mint over a period of 18 months.

Russia's embassy in Tehran said earlier that the presentation of the Russian-made exhibit at the 15th Sacred Koran international exhibition would provide an "excellent symbol of cooperation between Russia and the entire Islamic world."

Although Russia is predominantly Orthodox Christian, the country has a significant Muslim minority.

Prompted by the success of one of similar kind, Sotheby's is to host an auction of modern and contemporary Iranian Art in London.

Illuminated and unadorned manuscripts written in Persian and Turkish, embodying various topics ranging from myths and legends to astronomy and medicine, shall be auctioned in London Oct. 24.

Persian miniatures, paintings, ceramics, metalwork, woodwork, glass, jewel and other decorative arts are also to be featured in the collection inspired from a similar auction of Islamic world art presented earlier this year.

Along with the Iranian arts auction, there will also be the Islamic World's art auction with aspirations of creating an enhanced interest amongst collectors and connoisseurs.

The auction encompasses exquisite and rare significant works of art in excess of 400 pieces, oeuvres and formations such as Quranic manuscripts, textiles, metalwork, astronomical devices, weaponry, ceramics, glassware and paintings.

The items span from the rise of Islam in the 7th to 19th century through to the Ottoman, Safavid and Mogul empires.

The sale is to be the most unique and momentous of its kind to be hosted by Sotheby's, predicted to accrue beyond $10 million, presupposed to be of the most valuable Islamic collections ever auctioned
