How kind of him to want to give the election back to the people and for the people to know that it is their parliament. Is that him admitting it was never the people's in the first place and that they've never had any real power?

Labour - originated from labour organising to defend itself in the old days- you wrote a dissertation on this so are an expert. How can refinery workers defend themselves in Immingham against say Portuguese fellow workers coming in and just want to earn a crust under YOUR globalisation. Mind you not sure about the bit in Magna Carta about where all English yeomen may station their cart anywhere they like - I don't think the typical local borough parking stasi would like that!

Here's an idea. How about giving all MP's the elbow and instituting PROPER democracy via an internet vote on all matters. 'Cos lets be honest MP's dont represent us anyway do they? they represent only their party.

The AV system will be in Labours best interest, that's why Brown wants us to vote IN THAT SYSTEM... he's not talking about giving us a choice on various systems.

How about:

You give your vote to a candidate, then anyone with say more that 10% of the total votes cast gets elected and the votes they hold are used in parliament votes - so your vote is a real vote carried through to Parliament. Yes we get more MPs but we can afford it, the salary costs of MPs are peanuts in the grand scheme of things.

Also you should be able to withdraw/transfer your vote for a candidate after election.

None of this first past the post business where the majority of voters are ignored (who gets more that 50%?)

Stop MPs being exclusively elected on a minority vote.

Well Magna Carta 1215, Habeus Corpus Act 1679, The Bill of Rights 1689 Have all been ridden roughshod over & trodden on so much by his Government that no-one can see: Right to a trial by our peers, Freedom of speech & debates, Fines can only be issued by a court etc. The important parts are smudged by his & Tony Bliar's jackboots...
