don't know what the best shampoo is but make sure you use a nit comb, it gets out most of the little blighters and more importantly the eggs.

There's a shampoo called Riddance by A. Vogel you can buy in a health food shop (UK). The active ingredient is Neem (an indian herb) that disrupts the lices' feeding. It seems to kill both the lice and the eggs and takes away the need for daily combing out of new arrivals!! Unfortunately it costs about £6, however it is effective. No nasty ingredients, no organophosphates but contains nut oils so not suitable for nut-allergy kids.
Good luck ....nits can drive you bonkers!! (especially when you catch them too!  )

Having been through all the shampoo recommendations and following the schools guidelines, the best and most effective, and also safest thing for your child's head is to simply use a nit comb through wet, conditioned hair.I found that no matter what I did,the nits would always return when another child at school had them.Buying expensive treatments may get rid of nits but so will conditioner and a nit comb.Believe me,its the least expensive and safest way. Also I remember reading that if you got into the practice of combing hair rather than brushing, this would also deter nits.

level42 you are quite right but it is horribly tedious to do this night after night for months on end before all the little buggers finally emerge from their shells and are big enough to be caught by the comb. Especially on daughters with long hair!
I got VERY weary of it. I was happy to spend £6 and spare myself that for a little while. Yes, they do come back in the end, due to a new infection, but at least you've had a break from your own colony.

Yes,it is indeed tedious. At the time, myself and my two daughters had long hair too.I didn't do this every night though,I would do it perhaps every third night. What was (and still is)frightening is that I didn't want to keep putting these toxins on our hairs when it was always just delaying the return of nits.I would thoroughly do the wash/conditioner thing and keep our hairs tied up!I also got into the routine of combing rather than brushing.I did this for three weeks roughly, and it worked.I think the clincher for me was that I kept spending lots of money on these products that sometimes the nits got used to and I wasn't always happy with what was in these products, but of course its all a choice.:)

Shikakai hair wash might be worth a try.
Not recommended for use on blonde hair as it slightly darkens it.

Well i've heard Garlic will kill everything in childrens hair.
They might stink a bit but it is a natural remedy.
Grind a garlic clove to fine paste and mix it in some lemon juice. Massage this mixture into the head in the night before going to sleep. In the morning, have a good head wash. Wash the hair thoroughly. The pungent chemicals in the garlic will kill the lice overnight, and the morning bath will remove their dead bodies from the hair. This remedy must be continued for four to five days. The lice will completely be gone from the scalp. This is one important natural remedy for head lice.
Another remedy that definately works is Oil of Oregano.
Head lice and scabies.: Parasites such as head lice and scabies are no match for Oregano oil's powerful antiparasitic properties. Add a few drops to a tablespoon of shampoo to wash hair and scalp. Add a couple of drops to a tablespoon of vegetable oil to apply to hair after shampoo or to other affected areas.

Dare i suggest this C silver injested and put on the scalp leave it on for an hour then wash out plus use nit comb.
Bicarb is also good rubbed into scalp again leave then wash out plus drinking bicarb diluted in water.
Garlic also good nits hate it.
Tea Tree or lavender.
Shaving head is probably best treatment for boys and sorts prob out quickly.
Treat whole family at the same time cos there are no nit nurses anymore it is an ongoing problem that will keep coming back.

you could try Lush if you they may have something i think they have got a tea tree shampoo?
Injesting stuff is just as important as treating scalp so eating oregano and or garlic is good or Drinking C silver or Bicarb cos these nits are sucking the blood.
